Style Simplification Study: Ponies

I spent the last few days trying to figure out ways of speeding up my art creation workflow, as determined by the latest Patreon Choice results. I decided to start with ponies, and did quite a few sketches over three days, in an effort to find out ways to simplify my style.

I can't say that I was very successful in simplifying my style - perhaps I'm too set on my aesthetic tropes to be able to do that without a continued effort along an extended amount of time. However, I was able to gain some insight on a way to accelerate my production. I discovered that using thicker brushes during the linework phase allows me to focus less on precision, speeding up the process a lot. All I need is to add a little more "oomph" to the strokes, and I'll be able to execute it faster without losing almost any of the impact.

Above, you can see my final study example, in which I registered the times spent on each phase. The initial sketch phase still takes waaaaay too long, but that mostly attributable to the wing positions. I guess I spent about half that time on the wings alone!

You'll find attached to this post the other pony-themed study doodle canvases! They're messy, but perhaps you'll find them of interest.

I've been spending way too long on this, and I hope you're not led away by this. Next up, anthro figure treatment.
