Succession Season 1 Episode 7 Austerlitz

Comments

Between episodes 5-7 I think the show really hit its stride. Like I loved it from the beginning, but the cracks between personal and professional lives of Roy family now are deeply deeply fascinating. The Thanksgiving episode started mixing family a lot. Willa being yet another person to put Tom in his place was spectacular. As for the copies that Greg was doing he basically was taking copy of the first page of the legal documents (which would likely have all the dates/names for a tangible trail) basically to have some backup in case things blew up in his face. Note also he was very high from the weed he smoked with Roman and Grace. So who knows how that will pan out for him :D On the 6 episode coup, I will say Kendall did basically overreached and did himself in. He was counting on himself, Roman, Frank, Asha, Stewie and Lawrence (6) versus 3 old-guard duded, probably uncle Ewan, and uncertain Ilona (3-5). Instead of securing votes he did have or likely have he first called Ilona and spooked her. Then instead of handling any discussion on phone or maybe even video call, he went to her house, and risked not getting back to the city (Something Frank warned him even when they assumed he would be using helicopter to move around). As a result he did secure Ilona's vote but by failing to be in the room, he effectively lost Stewie and Lawrence who abstained, but how much of it was their decision made prior day and how much Ken not being there to better present his case and show leadership, and he was not there to ensure Roman follows through. With Ken in the room if Logan refused to leave they could even move the meeting to another room to remain semblance of impartiality. This to me was 'Ken is not ready' moment because he placed his priorities all wrong. And now we come to this episode. Even more broken children who have everything in the world except their fathers praise or so it seems. Roman is clearly always cowed in Logan's presence but somehow he does end up being the one who fulfills Logan's expectations the most in this ep, and yet earned no real praises. Logan was more focused on 'traitors' and exacting revenge on Ken in particular. I find Ken heartbreaking in this especially in light of his relationship with Rava and the kids. You are also pretty spot on the implied physical abuse of Logan by uncle who raised him (but he clearly is shielding his kids from it. They all think he cannot even swim, so Logan is deliberately not showing them his scars). They probably just know he had a strict upbringing but no details. That why Kendall mocking the stories of 'evil uncle' hit Logan so hard. As always great reactions and some great thoughts. I will be thrilled to continue the series with you next month :)
