October Update

Hello dear Patrons! The leaves are crunchy here and spooky season is upon us. In between working on my usual Youtube videos, I've been slowly remastering and fixing up my older songs for Spotify. I've learned a lot since I started, which is funny, because songs take me twice as long to create now as they used to. I just chalk that up to my perfectionism and the arrangements becoming more complex.

Also, if you're interested in a little tech update, I never mentioned that I got myself an upgrade! When I started out, I was using the free program Garageband, and it took me a long time to work up the nerve to jump to Logic Pro. Thankfully I was forced to make the switch when I worked on Crusader Kings, because I couldn't even export with the specs they required. Thank goodness I did—Logic is so much more powerful!

All that being said, this week I finally finished my remaster of Summertime Sadness, which hits streaming platforms next month. I hope you enjoy it, along with five more instrumentals. Some songs stand alone without vocals, while We Didn't Start The Fire and Holding Out For A Hero are more like karaoke tracks. As usual, I've attached the wavs so that you have the highest quality files, but let me know in the comments if I should also upload mp3s in future. Eventually I plan on releasing a compilation of instrumentals to the public in a single Youtube video. In the meantime, I need to get going on this month's song! I have some ideas brewing.

Thank you all, and take care!
Hildy

ooh yes Spitfire has some great free stuff! Looove their Gaelic voices one. I used to follow Tokyo Dawn Records back when they were a netlabel releasing free music... had no idea they were doing audio plugins now!! Will definitely check them out. Now that you're planning on doing more ambient tracks (hint hint ;) ) you should check out MNTRA Instruments, they make some awesome sampled virtual instruments which are great for organic ambient stuff

You should go for it! The other nice thing is that it's still a one time purchase and hasn't become a subscription yet (looking at you, Adobe suite...) If you've never looked at Spitfire, I highly recommend their free and paid VSTs, and plugins from Tokyo Dawn Labs. Also been quite fond of Renaissance Reverb on Waves.

Serious though!

Thank you Julian, that's really kind of you to say. :)

Your voice and your skills are certainly worth the extra bucks and the extra time!

ok now i'm really convinced ;) plugins are the main reason I want to upgrade, GB does not always handle them very well. I have a MIDI keyboard with a bunch of knobs and buttons too and GB has very limited MIDI controls

Travis N

It's a really great step up because if you've been using VSTs and other plugins, your saved presets actually transfer over AND you can open Garageband files in it. It's really familiar as well, so most of your skills will transfer over. The nicest part is that in Logic you can send multiple tracks to the same "bus", which means you don't need to have quite so many plugins running at the same time. 5 vocal tracks can all go to the same bus and have their reverb and delay applied, for instance.

Yeah, that's a tricky one because my process is so finicky and sometimes I don't know a song won't work until I attempt it. I think what I'd like to do is a poll to decide on another ambient track. I really enjoyed the last one, and I've been meaning to do another. :)

I've been producing in GarageBand too and have been considering upgrading to Logic Pro... I think you convinced me! GB is surprisingly powerful for a free app, but after using it a couple years I'm starting to noticed the limitations...

Travis N

Amazing as always! Any chance we might get to vote in a poll for which blingin' rendition comes next? That might not work with your process (i get that exploration is key)... Maybe it could be genre based? (Eg does the song Draw from Motown, classic rock, synth wave or pop punk?)
