Knock, knock!
The door inside of Bing Xue’s family apartment in New York was gently knocked, as someone reading a newspaper upside down while trying to comprehend what he was trying to read looked at the door, and then, it suddenly opened automatically.
Creaaak…
“Ah, thanks for opening the door, Karel. I’m back with the groceries for the week.”
A tall, muscular man with a gentle, handsome smile, short black hair, and blue eyes entered the living room, carrying with him a few paper bags full of groceries, bread, vegetables, noodles, minced meat, and more.
“You clearly don’t need to knock on the door; why can’t you just open it yourself? You could just leave it open too.”
“H-Hahah, that’s not how it works here… Did you have your houses with open doors all the time back on Mars?”
“We had no concept of doors; we lived a peaceful and connected life with each other. People were free to enter anyone’s houses, but we respected each other. So we usually didn’t unless requested.”
“I see! Well, around here there are thieves and so on, so if you leave the door open, someone could enter to rob your house.”
“Do humans really do that? Why? If someone needs something, such as food or clothes, why can’t they share? There are clearly humans with more resources than others. I doubt they need all of it, right?”
“I-I agree with you! But yeah… this is how human society was built… through the accumulation of wealth from a few individuals that create a country and… Uuh, and well, that’s… I haven’t studied that much.”
“Hall, you’re not a human either; how can you accept these things so easily as if you were born here? It feels like you’re a human sometimes, even though you are not.”
Hall gently placed the groceries over the kitchen table and then brought two cups of fresh tap water, placing one next to Martian Man, who began drinking it with his finger.
“Thanks.”
As he thanked Hall, the young, muscular man drank a bit of water and placed the cup on the small table near the sofa he sat over.
“You see, well, I was technically raised here. I fell from the stars when I was a child. A pair of farmers adopted me.”
“I see… You’re lucky your kind looks very similar to humans. Aside from your internal structure, which varies greatly.”
“Y-Yeah, I guess I’m lucky…”
“I would have definitely not had the opportunity for such privilege… You’re fortunate.”
“Thanks? I’ll take it as a compliment.”
“It was.”
“Good! So what do you want to eat?”
Karel remained in silence for a good moment, thinking about what he wanted to eat.
“Do you happen to have Trasgals?”
“T-Tra… trasgals? No, I don’t think we got that here on Earth… What are they?”
“Small, fruiting, worm-like bodies that Martians harvested off the underground caves we cultivated. They produce a delicious fruit, which we consumed sour, sweet, and klarxkisans.”
“Klarxki- what?”
“It is the name of a flavor that it appears does not register in your vocabulary… unique to our food, I suppose.”
“Oh…”
“But don’t worry about what I should eat. I can sustain myself by absorbing solar radiation and drinking water.”
“Yeah, I know. You once told me that’s why you were green-colored.”
“I appear of that color to your eyes, but to me, I look purple.”
“Oh…”
“Either way, yes.”
“Alright then! But I believe you can eat something else… So what do you want to enjoy?”
“…”
Karel remained in silence for a while, as if thinking.
“I suppose I could try something new… to make my life more exciting as I am trying to figure out what I’ve forgotten. Something… sweet?”
“Sweet! Sure, I bought some cake we were going to share for dinner, but I can give you a slice. How about chocolate cake with strawberries?”
“Sounds strange, but I’m in.”
“Hahah! Good!”
Karel was a very serious man, and Hall was quite the opposite; the two worked quite well together as they interacted, both fully knowing they weren’t humans but lived within their society.
“Hmm?”
Karel, who placed the newspaper down, noticed something, a blinding white light emerging out of thin air, and then materializing into Bing Xue.
FLASH!
“Oh, it is you. Welcome.”
“Hello, Karel! So I am with my family in the Moon right now and…”
“Moon? Oh, the satellite of this planet?”
“Yeah, yeah, that. We found this silver tablet in the moon’s caves and-”
“Oh, it’s Bing Xue! Hello! I didn’t expect any guests today! Do you want to stay for lunch today?”
Hall ran to greet Bing Xue with a gentle smile and his usual kindness.
“Ah, thank you, but no, I’m here only briefly, Hall! But I’ll take on that offer for later.”
“Oh, alright.”
“What tablet?”
Karel glanced at Bing Xue with his expressionless face as Bing Xue nodded, manifesting a silver-colored tablet of metal, or, well, an imitation, a projection.
The letters there were instantly recognizable to Karel.
“We found this in the moon; I cannot really understand it. Can you read it?”
“Yes, I can.”
“Oh really? Is it Martian?”
“No.”
“Then what is it?”
“…”
Martian Man’s red eyes slightly twitched.
“Hmm…”
“Karel?”
“It’s a message, a very ancient message left behind by a civilization that once traversed through this solar system.”
“Oh really?”
Karel looked down for a moment.
“So what does it say?”
“I will translate it for you.”
Karel began reading the tablet for Bing Xue.
“We leave here the proof of our existence to the universe outside. For the life of the Red or the Blue Stars, if you ever reach this point, congratulations, you have walked past the cradles of life into the universe beyond. Your journey is only beginning. It might be filled with pain and fear, but the wonders you will see across the endless horizon will make up for all the effort. We leave here a map. If one day you can travel through the stars, you’re invited to our home planet, where life was truly born. We, the Astral Guardians, will welcome you with open arms into the Primordial Cradle.”
