GLORY - Full Length Reaction!

Here's the full length reaction to Glory! This was an emotional ride, and I'm so glad I've finally watched this one! This was such an important story to tell. Enjoy!

As of the time I'm typing this, Apocalypse Now is tied with Glory on the latest poll, so I'm planning on watching that soon! Troy is just a couple of votes behind, so I'm going to add that to my line-up soon as well. I'll spread these movies out a bit because they're all pretty heavy, so I don't want to watch them back to back.

...and I forgot to mention Denzel's OTHER TWO Edward Zwick movies Courage Under Fire (1996) and The Siege (1998). #MoreDenzelWashingtonAndEdwardZwickForAddieCounts

If I may be allowed to flex for a moment 😂 This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Years later I was fortunate enough to get the movie’s music composer James Horner to autograph my dvd copy if the movie, one of my few prized possessions. RIP James Horner.

The 'Redux' cut of "Apocalypse Now" is actually longer at nearly 3½ hours; the 'Final Cut' is 3 hours; and the original theatrical cut is 2½ hours. The 'Final Cut' is the only version I've never seen, but I feel would likely be the best compromise between the other 2 versions. There was clearly a lot of good stuff left out of the theatrical cut, but the 'private time with the Bunnies' and French plantation segments both kind of bring the film to a standstill, and, from my understanding, the 'Final Cut' removes the former segment completely and at least shortens the latter. Unfortunately, I'm not sure about that version's availability, so I'm preparing myself for the theatrical cut all the same.

Yeah, I know, Laser... but every once in a while it gets a bit frustrating. It's a price you pay for being passionate, I guess, but I mean no disrespect toward Addie by it, so I apologize if that's how it came off to her.

From the start of being a Patreon subscriber Glory has been one of my favorite movies that I have hoped you would watch. It was absolutely worth the wait! That single tear from Denzel Washington has become known as the Glory tear. A single tear that projected volumes of emotions. Matthew Broderick Ferris Bueller's Day off.... check Glory .... Check My all time favorite at the top of the list MB movie.... Ladyhawke....

Easily one of my favorite soundtracks. I love how "Charging Fort Wagner" is clearly an homage to Carl Orff's "O Fortuna". (For a kick, YouTube "O Fortuna misheard lyrics) And until you watch it, I shall refer to "Apocalypse Now" as "Apocalypse a Little Later".

I have fond memories of watching North & South with my mum. She loved all that period drama and romance! It might be worth looking it up for a rewatch, but I always worry about how it might not live up to the memory. One tends to forget the crappier elements.

Glory really is a top-tier film. Old-fashioned in a good way, made with a love of the subject. Really inspired me as a lad. As for Apocalypse Now: gosh I hope Addie will be okay going up the river. Never get out of the boat!!

Speaking of Denzel Washington, who plays Pvt. Silas Trip, and won his VERY FIRST Oscar for his performance, I also suggest ALL of his Tony Scott movies Crimson Tide (1995), Man on Fire (2004), Déjà Vu (2006), The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009), and Unstoppable (2010), as well as his Antoine Fuqua movies Training Day (2001), The Magnificent Seven (2016), and The Equalizer trilogy. #MoreDenzelWashingtonForAddieCounts

Addie, I'm so glad to see that you're gonna watch "Apocalypse Now!" at some point. I didn't vote on the poll until yesterday (Tuesday) because a couple weeks ago I decided to pause my subscription for a few weeks, to catch up with my spending money, but then I saw you watched "There's Something About Addie.....I mean MARY"!!☺️, & I had to rejoin & splurge right away! 🤣 You're such a delight to watch any kind of movie with 💖 Anyway, 'Apocalypse Now!' was my top pick on the poll, so perhaps it was my vote that pushed it past the others. After all, it didn't say the poll had ended, so I voted. 🤷 Personally, I would recommend the longest version of the film, which is the Director's cut (or the Final cut, I'm not sure if there's a difference). Many think the extra scenes in it are not necessary & slow down the pace, but from my perspective, I like to see the longest available version of a movie, so I can make up my own mind about the "additions". I figure, why decide NOT to see a little more extra movie magic! Speaking of which, Addie, you always seem to settle on the theatrical cuts of movies, is that because that is your preference, or that's the only available version on the media outlets out there? The main reason I ask is because I use a movie app called Wodfix, which is $5 a month & has legal to semi-legal versions of movies on it. 🫣 I don't recommend it as an outlet to use, just to say I use it because it allows me to watch a movie on my phone while having your reaction video there also, as picture-in-picture, so your face is ½"x½" in the corner 😅 while I watch the movie. I've tried other outlets & I can't get picture-in-picture to play at the same time as the movie on them. It just so happens that the movies they have available on that app all seem to be the longer versions of movies. So I have to keep a close eye out for when the version you're watching differs from what I'm watching. I just don't have any monitors set up here, so I have to make do with my phone screen. (It's a "me" problem, not yours.) Sorry for being so long-winded, just making a plea for watching only longer versions of movies! 😅😂🤣 Plus, extra scenes really enhance the movie more often than not, e.g. I almost think you & I saw 2 different movies for "Almost Famous", the 40 extra minutes in the Director's cut really fleshes out the characters more & there was even more emotional impact to the story. And "........About Mary" longer version had 10 extra minutes that should've been left in for the theatrical release (large snake notwithstanding) 🐍Anyway, you're doing a swell job as it is, just thought I'd put my 2 cents in. Peace & Love 💖

Byrd, taste is subjective, and nobody is ALWAYS satisfied with the outcomes from the polls. This is Addie's channel, not yours & not mine. The chips will fall where they fall, & Addie will ultimately decide what movies she wil watch & when. There's a lot of movies that she has watched that are not my cup of tea, & I will probably never watch her reactions to them. Them's the breaks, bro.

LaserLamb

Alex, you sound a bit like an orderly in a nursing home, not wanting to upset one of the residents. Jus' sayin'. 🤷🏻‍♂️

LaserLamb

I'd honestly rather see Addie watch a healthy balance of different movies from different actors, directors and genres, regardless of how good or shitty they are.

Alex Tan

I'd honestly rather see Addie watch a string of really good movies from the same genre over a bunch of mediocre-to-shitty movies from different genres. Better yet, I'd rather she react to movies based on directors or actors over genres.

Byrd N. Hand

(to Addie) Hear, hear.

Alex Tan

She has. You just can't expect people to be able to handle back to back hard-hitting movies all the time. That's when the fun movies become Addie's emotional remedy. Sure, I do like to see her watch something andiety-inducing or heart-wrenching, but I also like to see her watch something fun as well.

Alex Tan

The main thing is that I try to keep a variety of content coming out, so I'm not going to watch three war movies in a row.

Happy Wednesday, Addie! 😊 I love this movie so much! I remember having to watch this in U.S. History class in high school. The cast is fantastic. And the story is amazing. For more on the Civil War, I very VERY highly recommend the 1985 mini-series "North & South" and it's 1986 mini-series sequel "North & South Book 2" both starring Patrick Swayze. Definitely looking forward to watching this reaction later this evening. Have a great day today! 😊

Randee Carreno

She's had over 3 years to do this. Did she really not think this through at all when she first started?? 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Byrd N. Hand

There are a lot of great Civil War movies out there, but this one is definitely my favorite. You asked how many men were killed at Antietam at the beginning, the answer was 22,000 in twelve hours, Union and Confederate. To this day, September 17, 1862 is the single bloodiest day in American history. I’ve been to the battlefield there several times and it is quite well preserved and I’d recommend it if you’re ever interested in visiting it. One of the things I love most about this movie is it shows the complexities of the politics that always surround war. As you can see from the 54th Massachusetts, as well as many of the white units they served alongside and the one Shaw served in at the beginning, servicemen come from all walks of life, some rich, some poor, and all have different reasons for serving, some of which might not even make sense to some. Nevertheless in this case they all put their lives on the line to fight for their country, state or home in spite of the prejudices many of them still had even for others who wore the same uniform they did and I think that is a pretty special thing. I know that’s a bit of a soap box speech, but I think it’s applicable to this movie.

Thomas Wetherell

War movies deal with very heavy topics that are hard for Addie to watch, especially considering how wholesome she is. That's why she wants to spread them out. Let's cut her some slack regarding her plan with war movies.

Alex Tan

Speaking of James Horner, who composed the film's music score, he also did the fanfare for the Universal Pictures 75th Anniversary logo in 1990. https://youtu.be/KHx7KTN7KdM?feature=shared However, he also composed some unused music for an unused Universal logo. This video has it materialized with the 1997 logo, which would eventually use the iconic Jerry Goldsmith fanfare. https://youtu.be/keNDunOApYo?feature=shared

Alex Tan

I'm assuming you'll watch the theatrical cut of "Apocalypse Now," but I'd encourage you to try and seek out the 'Final Cut.' Honestly, you need to start following Westley's advice from "The Princess Bride" and start trying to build up an immunity, so to speak, to these heavier films.

Happy Wednesday, Addie. I'm so glad that you watched Glory (1989). Denzel Washington earned his VERY FIRST Oscar for his supporting role as Pvt. Silas Trip. I own this movie on DVD and I can't wait to watch it soon. BTW, for Apocalypse Now (1979), I would recommend the 2001 Redux Cut, since it's the only longer version available on Prime. And for Troy (2004) I STRONGLY recommend the 2007 Director's Cut.
