BATMAN RETURNS - Full Length Reaction!

Comments

I have always like this one better then first, but love Jack as Joker

A late comment but I enjoyed the reaction. If you liked this one more than Batman (89) then you’d most likely enjoy the Schumacher films. They dial up the camp and the comic book silliness even more. A lot of the hate for those movies is from people who take things like superheroes way too seriously. They aren’t the best films but they are never boring and everyone involved knows it exactly what movie they are making. I’m looking forward to your reactions to The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn aka The Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad (2021) two movies that understand you need to be a little bit silly to get these characters.

Michael Keaton returned as Batman in The Flash movie in 2023. Also he was set to appear in the cancelled Batgirl movie. It was filmed in 2021-22 but for some reason they aren't going to release it. :(

Fun movie. 🙂 Some random thoughts from the reaction: - As far as good movies with Christopher Walken go, I definitely recommend seeing The Deer Hunter which he won an Academy Award for, it’s a fantastic (albeit sad) film. - Yes, Michelle Pfeiffer was really knocking the heads off of mannequins with her whip! 🙂 She apparently trained for months with a whip master and said she accidentally drew blood on their first day together, so that whip is no joke! - For me I’d put this one at probably 7.5 out of 10. On the downside the plot is kind of a bunch of nonsense (e.g. mind controlled penguins, penguin pallbearers, Selina just seemingly magically surviving things because “9 lives” and being resurrected by cats, none of it makes sense!) The stuff Joker does in the first movie are coherent by comparison, and that’s saying something! Even so, everything else about Batman Returns is pretty great. All the main actors really get into their parts, the soundtrack and look of the movie are memorable, and plot aside the character dialogue is at times funny and entertaining. So even though I’m not into the substance, the style wins me over. 👍 (The following sequels are skippable though. The third movie is mediocre and that’s only because Jim Carey tried his best in the Riddler role, and the later films are just disappointing. 👎)

Reportedly, Tim Burton was unhappy with studio interference on Batman, so he didn't want to direct the sequel. WB wanted him enough that they allowed full creative control to be written into his contract. That's why Batman Returns feels even more a Burton movie than the first one.

Fun fact, the scene where catwoman decapitates the department store mannequin heads was actually done practically by michelle pfeiffer

Variety

Pointless trivia: Penguin's dad is played by the late Paul Reubens, mainly famous as Peewee Hermann.

Andre Agog

I was about 5 when I saw this in the theaters. I distinctly remember a trailer for the 1992 Dracula movie scaring me, some of Penguin's skeletal henchmen scaring me and me crying at the beginning when the cat was killed.

Batman Forever, to me, was just OK. I liked that they had The Riddler and Two-Face but I thought both of them were too comedic. The Riddler I'm used to has a bit of comedy to him but not THAT much. The Two-Face I'm used to is MUCH more serious them Tommy Lee Jones' version.

Dark Shogun

Oh, and I mentioned this some time ago in a comment to something else, but I really recommend you check out The Penguin series. Colin Farrel does a great job.

Luis Fernandez

Michelle Pfeiffer will forever be my Catwoman. Camren Bicondova played Selina Kyle in Gotham, and I liked her cos she had a bit of a Pfeiffer thing going for her.

Luis Fernandez

I like the third movie Batman Forever (1995) too. It has a new director and very different style but its set in the same universe. Alfred and Commissioner Gordon have the same actors as in these movies. Val Kilmer plays Batman and Jim Carrey is The Riddler. Tommy Lee Jones is Two-Face.

Oswald's mother was also Simone from "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure," BTW. That one should be Addie's next Tim Burton reaction, IMO.

I'm excited to watch this and particularly excited for Man of steel. Quite a few reactors who watch Man of Steel have actually preferred the more realistic/grounded direction of superman in Man of steel vs the "goodies two shoes can do no wrong" type in the original. Even though Christopher Reeve is more charismatic. Man of Steel add moral Grey areas to what it means to be from another planet and I'm excited for you to see that.

I'll throw out 2 picks for each actor: For Keaton: "Gung Ho" and "Birdman (or, The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" For DeVito: "Ruthless People" and "Throw Momma from the Train" For Pfeiffer: "Ladyhawke" and "Married to the Mob" I'll throw in 2 for Tim Burton as well: "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" and "Sweeney Todd" And also for Christopher Walken: "The Deer Hunter" and "King of New York"

Speaking of Michelle Pfeiffer, I have three movie suggestions: Scarface (1983),: https://youtu.be/EtVd7jSRoms?feature=shared Dangerous Minds (1995), produced by Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer: https://youtu.be/hG2zuPa7QUg?feature=shared and One Fine Day (1996): https://youtu.be/x4Q35PdWJlo?feature=shared #MoreMichellePfeifferForAddieCounts

Hi Addie, I'm happy you enjoyed 'Returns', I love this film, its better than 'Batman '89'. Believe it or not, audiences at first rejected this film because they thought it was too dark but that's Batman and DC in general. Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman is iconic! Aside from the Arkham series, her Catwoman is my favorite. During filming, Michelle did in fact whipped off those mannequin heads in one take, that was real. Michael Gough's Alfred set the template and he is a highlight and that Vicky reference that Bruce mentions is an acknowledgment by Tim Burton as an apology to the fans who called out the moment when Alfred took Vicky into the Batcave to see Bruce, it was an out of character moment and Burton was sorry. Also, that was Paul Ruebens as Oswald's father, 'Peewee Herman's Big Adventure' was Tim Burton's debut feature film. 'Batman Returns' is one of the best sequels ever and yes, it is a Christmas film.

I know, right. No wonder why Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997) ended up having a lighter tone, which caused both movies to end up being the schlocky cheeseballs that they are

Happy Monday, Addie! I hope that you had a great weekend. 😊 I've been looking forward to this one. It's the return of Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman. And we get the additions of Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman and Danny DeVito as the Penguin. For more Michael Keaton, I highly recommend the 1983 movie "Mr. Mom". For more Michelle Pfeiffer, I very highly recommend the 2007 "Stardust". And for more Danny DeVito, I highly recommend the 1988 movie "Twins". Definitely looking forward to watching this reaction later this evening. Have a great day today! 😊

I still don't understand what parents' fusses were all about. It's as if they forgot that the first one was also PG-13. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

*Be particularly careful in editing this one for YT. I've seen a few other channels get their reactions to it blocked. 😬 Well, you now seen all the superhero movies which I have any interest. Annette Bening was originally supposed to play Catwoman, but got pregnant from Warren Beatty shortly before filming began, forcing her to drop out and be replaced by Pfeiffer. As good of an actress as Bening is, I'm not sure if she would've been as iconic as Pfeiffer made her. 🤔 Max Schreck was actually the name of the actor who played the titular role in the 1922 silent film "Nosferatu," one of the first-ever vampire films. "Just the pussy I've been looking for..." 😂 As TBR Schmitt pointed out in their reaction, the 3 main characters are all rather horny in this movie. 😏

Happy Monday, Addie. Batman Returns (1992) is the BEST Michael Keaton Batman movie, EVER! It's darker and edgier than Batman (1989). So dark that even McDonald's had to recall their Happy Meal toys for the movie. I even get a jam out of "Face to Face" by Siouxie and the Banshees as well.
