2024-12-09 03:54:45 +0000 UTCI did the calculation long time ago - when the movie came out. It didn't quite add up. Neither did the calculation on "Wall Street" - but that calculation could be 'off-set' by 'previous holdings.'

The Dukes started buying from the start, assuming that after the crop report was made public the prices would soar due to shortages in oranges. Others saw the Dukes buying and started buying as well ("they are trying to corner the market... they must know something"), and that caused the price to rise. That wasn't a concern for the Dukes prior to the report being made public because, due to their false information, they thought the price would rise more. After the report was revealed to be fake, the Dukes were hit with the double whammy of prices falling and their failure to sell. So when the market closed they were stuck with the huge bill. The boys took a different approach because they had different information. They waited for the Dukes to drive the price up, and when it hit a certain point, they started selling. Note that they were "selling high" before they actually possessed the thing they were selling. When the crop report was made public, people saw that there would be no shortage of oranges and the prices went way down. When they hit a certain level the boys were then able to "buy low" and thus were able to deliver everything they had previously sold. This difference in buying and selling price is where they made their money.

The pawnbroker was played by bluesman Bo Diddley. We get a glimpse of a very young Giancarlo Esposito in the jail scene. For more Don Ameche, who played Mortimer Duke, check out Midnight (1939), Heaven Can Wait (1943), and Cocoon (1985). For more of Mozart's Non piu andrai (1786), check out Amadeus (1984). (In the deepest possible voice: "Yeah1")

Eddie Murphy's fourth-wall break (as if to say, "Could these assholes be any more patronizing?") is also brilliant. (I guess "Batman Returns" will be on Monday.)
