What a great movie! I watched Greyhound with Tom Hanks a few months ago and there's definitely some thematic similarities between the two films, they're both very tight looks at life on a warship facing a tough opponent. Greyhound is a pretty good film, but Master and Commander definitely feels like a masterwork, it really does such a fantastic job getting you hooked watching not just the fine details of sailing a 19th century warship but also presenting so many characters with personal hooks to make you interested in them as individuals as well.

Inches because the metric system comes from Napoleon’s France. Master and Commander is such a solid well built movie. I appreciate them not turning away from the death and horror. Two other good Russell Crowe period films are The 3:10 to Yuma (2007) and LA Confidential (1997). What he’s best at, as an actor, is making you understand the depths of his characters.

Addie: "Would they be using inches in this time?" Well fun fact, the "Imperial standard" system was used by the british well before they started using the metric system. When America was colonized by the British, it became the standard here too, then later, the British changed and used their newly adopted Metric system, but the Americans kept on using the Imperial standard.

I also second "a beautiful mind"

A great movie, and I'm glad you enjoyed it, Addie. I played "Assassin's Creed: Black Flag" a few years back (you play as the captain of a pirate ship), and I love the sea chanteys. I used to sail everywhere instead of fast traveling in the game just to enjoy the crew singing as I traveled. I was so happy that they had a few of them in this movie too. I've seen a few people here recommend "A Beautiful Mind," and I have to add another recommendation for that movie, even if I won't watch the reaction myself (as a person with schizophrenia, it's a little too triggering for me). Watching it once was enough. Hope you're having a splendid week! And remember. Always choose the lesser of two weevils!

Peter Weir would be a good director on which to do a future poll, given his body of work: "The Cars That Ate Paris" (Paris, Australia, not Paris, France), "Picnic at Hanging Rock," "The Last Wave," "The Plumber," "Gallipoli," "The Year of Living Dangerously," "Witness," "The Mosquito Coast," "Dead Poets Society," "Green Card," "Fearless," "The Truman Show," and "The Way Back."

I feel that more than being an action movie -- even though it has plenty of action -- or being an adventure movie -- even though it is an adventure -- this movie shows LIFE at sea. Including the boring parts, and the monotonous parts, and the time for maintenance and eating and swapping stories and growing personal grudges and....everything. If you're interested in similar works, I can recommend the series of TV films "Hornblower" from the late-'90s/early-'00s. Based on the Horatio Hornblower novels, it also takes place during the Napoleonic Wars. I doubt the audience is large enough to make a published reaction worthwhile (I don't think I even heard of the series before I stumbled across it about five years ago) but they're good on their own and give a great look at seaman's life with a more serious touch than "Pirate's of the Caribbean". There's also the TV series "Black Sails", which is absolutely FANTASTIC, but is a very different animal than this movie.

Very cool...this movie is spectacular.

I was looking forward to the weevil joke ever since this movie ended in second place on the poll. Your eye roll was awesome! “Farewell and adieu” sung here was also sang in Jaws by Quint. James D’Arcy, who played Tom Pullings, would grow up to work with Howard Stark and be Jarvis on the show, Agent Carter (only two seasons/18 episodes total). AND he was Jarvis in Endgame with Stark when Tony said goodbye to Howard. Then we have Paul Bettany, who would be the voice of Jarvis before he became Vision. Killick the cook is such an underrated character. His mumbling and grumbling was so funny. Jack knew of Peter’s potential early on, even before he put him on the decoy and then eventually promoted him. His lip quivering before he spoke his name at the end broke me. Jonah / superstitions were not to be trifled with on a ship. All it took was a whisper or an assumption and the domino effect would begin. Blakeney is acting Captain when Jack is off the ship. “Take command of the ship? Thank you, sir.” That smile on his face was incredible. He seemed to be your favorite. He earned the Addieration you gave him. lol The funniest line to me was when Blakeney told everyone to tie neck clothes onto their arms. “On your right upper arm, to tell friend from foe.” Davies asks, “The arm you got or the arm you don’t got?” “All right. That’s enough cheek, Davies.” I’m so happy that you enjoyed this that I’m going to watch it again. Take care, Addie!

Happy Wednesday, Addie! 😊 This is easily one of my favorite Russell Crowe movies. I keep forgetting that Paul Bettany is in one. I saw that "A Beautiful Mind" has been recommended to you, I'm going to second that recommendation. Definitely looking forward to watching this reaction later this evening. Have a great day today. 😊

Ya getting too far ahead! LOL

Happy Wednesday, Addie. I'm so glad that you enjoyed Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003). I own this movie on DVD in both Widescreen (2.39:1) & Full Screen (1.33:1) formats and I plan on watching it at some point this weekend. Another movie with Russell Crowe & Paul Bettany that I would definitely suggest to you is A Beautiful Mind (2001). #ABeautifulMindForAddieCounts
