Only Hordy Jones had a superiority complex, where instead of hating them because they were violated by humans, he sees fishmen as the superior beings. Other fishmen were just assaulted and enslaved by humans so it wasn’t a superiority complex for them, it was a violation.

2025-11-08 21:09:29 +0000 UTCYou called the queen "A brat with big dreams": isn't that also the perfect description for Luffy too?~ Having characters like Arlong just seething with hate for humans is to have him stand in contrast with the much more common mindset of the locals that the Queen drunkenly yelled at for being cowards. The basic mindset of Fishman as a 'minority race' (I hate having to use those words in this political climate, but it's accurate) is that because humans are the "superior" race, is to just go "we don't want to fight back, we just accept that we're going to be second clas citizens and are just content to stay in out literal bubble". However with Arlong and Tiger, that fear morphed over into hatred. In Tiger case he hated them so much he wouldn't even allow them to save his life, and with Arlong his mindset basically became "Why should I treat you as the superior race when "we're" the ones that deserve to be treated as the superior race?" It's the same concept where both groups are reacting to humans placing themselves above Fishmen, just getting reacted to in two different ways. Which incidentally also brings up the whole point about how they could hate humans when Whitebeard is around. Without going into as much detail as I'd like (since the show itself is going to touch on this idea more anyway): Whitebeard being "one of the good ones" isn't going to make a difference to most people because it's proof that humans are the ones in charge. As I said; Arlong, Tiger, Jinbe in his youth; the fishmen that have an actual *hatred* for humans are themselves a small group: most fishman "hate" because they know they are seen as the inferior race when compared to the humans.. So having Whitebeard flex his power to save them? If anything; that just confirms their fear, because it implicitly says "Humans are so far above us; that we need another human to do the fighting on our behalf". It might give them peace (relatively speaking) and it does show that not all humans hate them, but it doesn't change the core concept of the fact the fear and/or hate the most of the Fishman have towards humanity stems from the fact that Fishman feel like they are powerless when faced with the actions and decisions of humans. It's why Tiger became the living legend that he was; he was the first Fishman in memory to do something powerful enough to make humans take notice by actually stopping them doing what they wanted.
