I'm glad you enjoyed this. This is one of those movies I'll watch whenever it's on, so I've seen it countless times. This movie is a near shot-for-shot/line-for-line of a 1957 movie Zero Hour! The writers were so nervous they might get in trouble about it, despite lawyers telling them their movie would be covered under parody, that they bought the script and rights to Zero Hour! There's a YouTube video of a side-by-side of Airplane! and Zero Hour! that switches back and forth between movies mid-line and it matches perfectly. Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Leslie Neilson, and Peter Graves were all well known serious actors at the time who had never done comedy. The writers/directors told them to play it straight as they could because the comedy would come from their straight responses to the lunacy going on around them There are also a lot of jokes from the time, like the religious groups in the airport, and the couple on the plane where the woman would think to herself that her husband "didn't do X at home." The actors were from a long-running coffee commercial. I will also never recover from seeing Barbara Billingsly (the mother from Leave it to Beaver) speaking jive... If you're into it, check out the Naked Gun series. Made by the same writers/director, David and Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams.

Great reaction Addie! The one subtle joke I've never seen anyone catch is that, throughout the entire movie, the plane's sound effects are propeller engines. On a jet airliner.

After this I'm sure you'll be asked to watch Naked Gun which has the same kind of sense of humor. My recommendation would be Top Secret. My favorite scene/joke, whatever we can call it is when the Dr asks the flight attendant if she's okay.. "I'm scared. I've never been so scared. And besides, I'm 26 and I'm not married." (then the other lady appears and says) "Well, to be honest, I've never been so scared. But at least I have a husband." Addie: "Oooooo... ouch?!" A bunch of other reactors leave that out on videos but I'm happy to have seen your reaction. Happy to see you have some laughs! Take care, Addie!!

What is great is all these actors, famous in their day, were all serious dramatic actors and even in this movie they all played it straight. The Naked Gun is another movie by the same team and well worth a watch. Also the sound effect they used for the plane was not for a jet but a propeller based airplane, a small hard to notice gag.

Indeed, for years I missed the 'Whacking material' placard under the dirty magazines, as well as the ice cream cone used as a microphone.

So, Airplane!, huh? Just want to tell you good luck, we’re all counting on you. Seriously, it’s a riot that just sales by at such a clip, it invites rewatching to catch jokes you missed or jokes that had you going “Did they REALLY just do that?” And then there’s the legend of this movie being screened at the Carter White House days after the 1980 election. Needless to say, the “I haven’t been this sick since I saw that Ronald Reagan movie!” caused a few laughs.

after the credits they cut back to the taxi cab

Just make sure she's aware of its grittier central storyline, since the reactors I've seen watch it were totally jarred by it. Apparently they assumed it was going to be in the same vein as the likes of "Footloose" or "Dirty Dancing."

now you need to watch Saturday night fever

the guy in the cab is Howard Jarvis, he helped lower property taxes in california

Reactors never catch this one.

Addie, to get full closure, you might want to check out the very end credits of this movie. It may not be the MCU but there is something there. 🙂

Be sure to also check out "Top Secret!" at some point (Zucker/Abrahamson/Zucker's next movie). I consider it even better (and more clever... and more absurd) than this.

Happy Monday, Addie! I hope that you had a great weekend. 😊 This is such a fun movie, and one of my favorite 80s comedy films. I also highly recommend the sequel "Airplane 2: The Sequel". It's just as if not more hilarious than this one. Have a great day today! 😊

Randee Carreno

Speaking of Jerry Zucker, who co-directed this movie, I also suggest The Naked Gun trilogy, Ghost (1990), First Knight (1995), and Rat Race (2001).

Happy Monday, Addie. Airplane! (1980) is one wild & hilarious flight that I'm looking forward to watching soon.
