GROUNDHOG DAY - Full Length Reaction!

Here's the full length reaction to Groundhog Day! I knew this was a comedy, but I didn't expect the movie to be so incredibly sweet! One of my new favorite movies. Enjoy!

GROUNDHOG DAY - Full Length Reaction!

I know it's a comedy and a very funny one at that imo, but the sequence with the old man will always get me emotional and the part where Rita has fallen asleep and Phil tells her how much he loves her will always be the scene in any movie that gets me to cry more than anything other.

my buddies and I guessed 30 years, based on time required to learn Piano, Ice Scupture, French, ect... But we were just making an educated guess.

Yes, the original writer gave Phil 10,000 years, Harold Ramos trimmed it down to 50 years.

I once went to a screening of this and won a poster for knowing that the screnwriter has said he believes Phil repeated the day for 10,000 years.

No one can make narcissistic jerks more charming than Bill Murray. I hope "Scrooged" will be one of your winners next Christmas... and that you can eventually check out "Meatballs," "Stripes," "Quick Change," "Lost in Translation," and "St. Vincent" for the channel, not to mention "Caddyshack," "Tootsie," and "Rushmore" (not to mention most of Wes Anderson's other films), where he has mere supporting roles.

The script says 10,000 years which to me seems much more likely. He wasn't just learning skills, he literally learns everything there is about everyone in the town including exactly where they are at all times.

Sonny Smith

okay it's fun to count the days... I'd also like to chime in - he mentioned 6 months to get good at throwing cards into a hat. He learned French. He learned piano, ice sculpture. He watched the same movie 100 times. There's a turning point and in Bill Murray movies he always makes that point subtle - I believe it was after Rita inspired him she said "I don't know Phil, it could be a good thing!" After that day Phil woke up with a new purpose. He was no longer trying to please anyone, he started to become acquainted with himself and he found out what he liked and what he wanted to do. When he was ice sculpting he was in a zone and doesn't notice anyone around him until his name was called out. That's an artist. It didn't seem like he was doing it for points. He was following the muse, his goal may be as simple as coaxing what is in the ice to come out. It's meditative and with a purpose but without tightly controlling the outcome. He was reading in a cafe and he heard music as if for the first time and he started looking around with a smile to see if anybody else had become awakened at that moment like he himself.

Phil was stuck in Punxsutawney for 33 years and 350 days. These included the 38 “Days shown on screen”, the 414 “Days mentioned” (including the “six months. Four to five hours a day” spent throwing playing cards into a hat), and the colossal 11,931 “Days spent learning”. Based off the theory that it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert at anything, this third stage covered the time needed for Phil to learn French poetry, ice sculpting and the piano. All in the name of impressing his producer Rita, played by Andie MacDowell.

after reading Addie's comment I'm inclined to watch this right away!... 🙂

One of the great all time American comedies. Everyone from any faith, race, or country can find meaning in this film. Here is the director/writer Harold Ramis talking about that many years later - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkEUpymTanA

Happy Monday, Addie! I hope that you had a great weekend. 😊 RIP always to Director Harold Ramis! This is one of my favorite Bill Murray movies. And Andie McDowell is one of my favorite actresses. Fun, but Sad Fact: Bill Murray and Harold Ramis(who of course also starred in the first two Ghostbusters movies together) had a major falling out on the set of this movie over creative differences. But thankfully they were able to patch up their friendship just before Harold Ramis passed away. This is a fun movie that I always have to watch at least two or three times during the "Groundhog Day" marathon on tv. Have a great day today! 😊

Randee Carreno

Awesome, Addie! It's also one of my favorites. So many quotable lines, an unlikely but adorable romance, extreme character development (!), but mostly such a great message: The only way to true happiness is through serving others. I'm so glad you liked it!

Phil Stubblefield

I dated your sister Mary Pat a couple times until you told me not to anymore?

Phil Stubblefield

Phil? Phil Connors?

Happy Monday, Addie. Groundhog Day (1993) looks like a fun comedy and I'm looking forward to watching it soon, when I get home from work.
