Just look back at how he managed to convince Robin to pursue life, look at how he seemed to understand Nami was suffering without having heard her story and Nami just shouting at him to leave. Remember when he deliberately got Koby to attack him by talking to the marines about Koby's past, in order to convince the Marines that they were not together so that Koby would be allowed to join the Marines? That doesn't just come from intelligence in general, it comes from an intelligent understanding of people's emotions and knowing just what to do (instinctively) to remedy someone's problem or to come to the appropriate solution in an emotionally charged setting.
