Aang didn’t learn from the first time, as you can see when he glows, he’s unconscious and something takes over, maybe it’s another instinct that activates or the glow is something in itself, so the first time he intended to freeze himself, second time he intended not to. It’s not Aang learning since he’s not in charge of his body when he’s in that state. And I don’t think Zuko back then would’ve been friends with Aang because he sees other nations as his enemies in the first place.

Dude thank you so much for that one, cause as soon as he asked that, I realized that in the last 20+ rewatches I've done, I have never once questioned WHY he froze himself. I guess i kind of just thought it was a compete accident, but youre right; there's no way it could have been accidental while in the Avatar State. Freezing himself wasn't the accident. Being stuck there for 100 years, was.
Wow. That's crrrazy bro 😆

Zuko’s situation is like Aang’s situation! Both weren’t obedient lol.

25:13 Sokka is just full of comedy, he was like: “I’m too young to die” and the old guy said, “I’m not, but I still don’t wanna”.

Also; now is probably the best time to talk about the tattoos; did you notice how the airbending elders all had the tattoos while the rest if the kids didnt?
Thats not just a design choice: in the airbending culture there are 35 (36? Cant remember off the top of my head lol) aspects of airbending. If you can demonstrate proficiency in all of them, you are given the tattoos as a symbol of the right to be called an airbending master.
Aang is a prodigy even for an avatar, and is actually the youngest airbender in history to be given tattoos. (Its also why he doesn’t need to really work on his air bending: even other airbenders already consider him to have mastered the art, or he wouldn’t have been given the arrows.)

Regarding your question at the end: its not about learning per se, but mindset.
Remember that Aang was in the Avatar State both times: he has access to lifetimes worth of knowledge and skill as a bender, meaning he could basically do whatever he wanted.
So the first time it happened, he chose to freeze himself, because he was still trying to run and hide. (The fact he was there for 100 years was just unfortunate; Aang himself said he only thought he would be frozen for about a week.) Now though, he has people that he wants to save and protect, so he got them out immediately.

This show has some really subtle moments. After Aang told Katara his story she said the avatar gives people hope. And then Iroh finishes Zuko's story and says the avatar gives Zuko hope. The avatar even gives the bad guys hope. Nice writing.

Here's an interesting fact, the toy thing is the real life method they use to determine who is the reincarnated Dalai Lama
