It's been confirmed that the actual sternitter is James (the little guy). Mask is just some kind of ideal fighter James is imagining. That's a pretty fun twist :)

Kensei was no diffing him until he got amped by James a second time after already being amped while fighting Shuhei, Ikkaku, and Yumichika. Also, Kubo has confirmed that James is actually the real Sternritter S, Mask is just an embodiment and extension of his ideal superstar, hence why Yhwach said "James is dead", not "Mask is dead". Two captains nearly got killed by an imaginary friend lmao.

Its still stupid to follow such a law DURING WAR.

And if you see a character as goofy you at least have to give him credit when he is 100% serious. When he went into his Vol Stan Dig form the way that he said to Renji that he will turn to dust and never touch the ground was absolutely fire and I love the design. Mask also had his own theme song just like Renji I loved both of them so much

Dude is literally if the anime "power of friendship" speech was weaponized for the villains.
