If anything that act of mercy only reaffirmed Danzo that the Third is weak. He didn't attempted further assassination but he sure worked together with Orochimaru and also let the attack of the Sound and the Sand on the leaf happen iirc. Danzo projected all his negative traits amongst other people but the Third also projected his traits on to others and really thought that Danzo would respect him for sparing his life or even be thankful.

Kakashi’s mind really got twisted here that was insane :P Hiruzen just sauced on Danzo I loved his face when he knew he fucked up :D well Hiruzen was never even able to kill Orochimaru even though he felt that he was doing all these atrocious things so Im not surprised he spared Danzo :)

I don't think Yamato could have done much here anyway. Yamato was still just a kid (age 10), I doubt such a young inexperienced kid could really have helped minato in his fight against the 9 tails here. Maybe if this incident took place later in date when, Yamato was a bit more grown up, then his help would have been crucial but this young /small Yamato would have been useless against the 9 tails even with the wood style.

Damn, Danzo really could have helped with Yamato´s Wood Style, freaking snake he wanted Minato to die so he could became Hokage, also Hiruzen and Naruto during Pain´s attack on the Leaf
