2024-03-09 18:21:42 +0000 UTCSo a quick factoid about the nurses. Both Rene and the black nurse were real people. Rene Lemaire was around 30 years old. She came back to Bastogne to visit her parents over the holidays and got trapped during the Siege of Bastogne. The black nurse was named Augusta Chiwy. She was half Congolese and half Belgian and 23 at the time. Her uncle was a doctor treating the casualties of Bastogne and she assisted him. When the siege started on December 16, 1944, both Augusta and Renee volunteered to treat the wounded at the American aid station pretty much round the clock. During the bombing on Christmas, the aid station was hit. Renee was evacutating wounded. She went back in a final time and was killed when the church was hit along with 30 others. Augusta was in an adjacent building and survived. She died in 2015. Renee and Augusta are both known as "The Angels of Bastogne".
