2023-10-20 20:06:24 +0000 UTCThe reason they didn't retreat into the wall is because the Beast Titan blocked the gate with the first boulder he threw, meaning they can't take the horses through the wall (and they obviously can't carry them over). They could leave the horses to get crushed by rocks and ODM to the other side of the wall, but that would leave them unable to get back home even if they were able to beat Bertholdt and the others — heading back on foot isn't even an option because there are other dumb titans between the outer wall and the inner wall and they'd get caught. Eren could attempt to carry some people back, but he'd probably run out of energy between carrying the Scouts, fighting off titans, and travelling a long distance in his Titan form, especially since he'd just been using it to fight Bertholdt and Reiner. Basically if they let their horses get killed they're likely to all die trying to get home regardless of what happens in this fight. To quote Oluo from Levi Squad, "the mission isn't over until you're home in your bed."
