It's clear this race needs some discussion. Is it too powerful? What builds stand out?

Also very thematic. I like it.

Beast Barbarian could also work well with Bugbear: Surprise Attack synergizes with the additional claw attack during rage and with Advantage on Initiative. In addition, high mobility through Fast Movement and Instinctive Pounce ensures that you get into melee on the first turn and Reckless Attack ensures that you hit those additional 2d6. So I'm hoping for some kind of Wolverine build! 8-)

I understand surprise is not reliable, but a build with Hexblade 2, Assassin 3, Battlemaster 4, Sorcerer 4 and Gloomstalker 4 will give you 12 eldritch blast at 300 ft, with +11 to hit (and precison attacks), + 10 to initiative (plus 1d8 from battlemaster), +10 to stealth.
I understand surprise is not easy to get, but surely between your ability to attack from 300ft away outside, and be invisible in darkness inside, you'll get suprise on a not insignificant number of combats per day, and thus autocrit on what might be 11 out of 12 eldritch blast for 2d10+5+4d6 damage each.
Now you get crazy low CON and are the definition of a glass canon, but that's still a shitload of damage, and then you do in the low 200s first round without surprise, and never less than baseline the rest of combat without any resources.
