Gaining surprise through Pass Without Trace

Working through the maze of rules to answer if this works.

Gaining surprise through Pass Without Trace

Ok I’ll go with your comparison. Yes it’s the same check but it’s a totally different task. you trying to grapple and braking a door are two different tasks, but with moving stealthily and hideing are practically the same. You are trying to avoid being seen by someone. And I agree that if you open a door you also might draw some attention and lose your hidden state but if you just come around a corner or behind a some obstruction I’ll think you are still hidden, as long of course that your target not actively looking for you or on guard for someone to come the same way.

but allow me to make a comparison. If I make an athletics check to break down a door, then attempt to grapple the creature behind the door, should the DM call for a new roll? Grapple doesn't say specifically you make a roll either, just that you compare the results - basically the same wording. Why would I read checking for surprise one way and checking for grapple another way?

The reason I came to that conclusion is because a stealth roll for moving silently and a stealth roll for hiding are 2 different things. You are correct it doesn't specifically say you make a roll at that time, it just says to compare the results.

I first thank you for the informative video. Love your work. I watched this one a few times. I don’t understand why you came to the conclusion that the players need to roll for surprise at the start of combat. The raw don’t really say make a roll for surprise. Its say the DM compares the Dexterity (Stealth) checks of anyone hiding with the passive Wisdom (Perception) score of each creature on the opposing side. I believe it means the dexterity stealth roll the party made before starting combat. And btw as a DM you can also use the group check rules for a group stealth check, so only half of the group will need to pass the check. Love to hear your thoughts.
