Patron early release: Melee or Ranged weapons?

Which are better? Well, it depends.

I sound like a broken record, but in movies Robin Hood uses a longbow and sword. Unlike any other edition 5E has really set a division between dexterity and strength. I feel this video aligns with your ability score video. Something has to be an 8. And no one is going to have 15 in strength and 14 in dex because it would not be optimal in any fairness. My idea still stands... consider dex to hit and strength for damage. And right here you have your power attack essentially built in. Someone with a high strength and low dex doesn't hit often... but hits hard. Try it out, it works. It will not be super optimal but in allows for you to have a dexterous elf or samurai who finesses a great sword... they just don't get a high damage bonus. Finesse weapons would require a 13 dex min, and heavy weapons would require a 13 strength min. This could work out but it would devalue mental stats some.

Javelins for the win! Everything about melee seems more exciting except that you have to close and pretty much stay there in the mess. The lure of amazing ranged damage is fun, except I always see disadvantage from proximity in our games, one way or another. But that holds true for ranged casting too.
