I've always used the diagonal method, to the point that before seeing this video I didn't realise there was an alternative.

your logic is circular. (sorry I just couldn't resist). But my method is when in person on a table, use rulers or real templates. When on Roll20, use drawn shapes.

Thank you for this. We've had this debate since 5e was released, and never had a satisfactory way to look at it.
