The background noise/music includes sounds recorded at a the Ignalina nuclear power plant in Lithuania, which is of a very similar design as Chernobyl (and was used as a filming location for the series as well), so it's very fitting that it would remind you of the power plant.

Can't say I enjoyed watching again, but I endured watching it again with you because I value your comments, Chandra. Watching it a second time allowed me to really see just how flawed some humans can be in certain situations. Chernobyl was horrifying, I remember all the news coverage as a young adult. All the souls lost and all the brave souls that took on the nightmarish tasks of clean-up. So much of it was initially covered up and so many secrets and disgusting behaviors that led to the disaster. Yet, they still won't be truthful about the death toll. I've read that the Chernobyl exclusion zone is not expected to be habitable for humans for at least 20,000 years, maybe more!! I speculate that mankind won't even be alive on this planet in that amount of time! In the U.S. there was the Three Mile Island nuclear accident in 1979 which was a partial meltdown. Scared me to death since I lived in Pennsylvania at the time about 60 miles away. It was the most serious accident in U.S. commercial nuclear power history. And now big techies in the U.S. are talking about using old power plants, including Three Mile Island and developing new, modern nuclear plants as well to generate energy for all the power guzzling data centers and more to come. They claim they will need a LOT!! UGH!

Just starting my watch of the series alongside you, Chandra. As a high school student, I was fascinated with nuclear power, toyed with going into nuclear engineering, and read an amazing book about Chernobyl called “Ablaze: The Story of the Heroes and Victims of Chernobyl”. It gives a lot of detail and explanation of the accident and I highly recommend it.
