Comedy Movie Poll
Added 2024-12-18 06:38:09 +0000 UTCHellooooo! We've got another poll for ya, but first... last week's winner was The Shining! I've heard the name Stanley Kubrick before, but have never seen one of his movies, that I know of haha... so I'm excited to see what all the hype is about!
This week we're going with comedies! These movies have been previously recommended by you, so we're curious to see what will win. And just as a side note, we've both seen Top Gun (which we've been told is what Hot Shots is a parody of).

Thank you!! We never know if there's going to be one or not on movies, so knowing this ahead of time is soooo helpful

2024-12-24 16:12:54 +0000 UTCSuper looking forward to "The Shining," btw! Kubrick is a genius with pacing (especially the "slow burn") and layers so much stuff in his movies that people are still digging into the layers and discussing what they mean all these decades later. Not to mention all the subtle things that happen on screen that you'll never notice but which affect your emotion as you watch (e.g. small things that are out of place or move between shots, colors, patterns, etc). Dude is a next-level director. Plus, in "The Shining," you get a generational performance from Jack Nicholson. The only bummer about "The Shining" is that -- no spoilers -- there's def a moment that's a little rough in 2024, but if you take it as an illumination of character (which it is) rather than just for the sake of it, it helps. At least it goes by fairly quickly.

2024-12-19 02:24:37 +0000 UTCComedy is subjective? No kidding. Brevity is the soul of wit.

2024-12-19 02:11:10 +0000 UTCBros: All comedy is subjective. And there's no such thing as an "objective opinion." We each like what we like and dislike what we dislike and that's what makes the world interesting. The only wrong answer is to insist that there are wrong answers. Either way, let's be real: All the movies on this poll are corny in some way. I mean, with the three movies that aren't Holy Grail, many of the jokes are based on puns. That's the lowest-hanging fruit of comedy and is pretty much the definition of "corny." Also, by the time he gets to "Naked Gun," Leslie Nielsen has traded in the purely dry delivery that was so funny in "Airplane!" with some cringey slapstick and "funny" facial expressions that, imo, make those moments super corny. And "Hot Shots" is as goofy as movies get. To some degree, they're all just slapstick and dad jokes. That being said, personally, I really like all the movies on this poll and hope they eventually get to all of them. They're all fun AND corny in their own way, and that's okay. Just as it's okay for you two to disagree on which ones you enjoy and which ones you don't. Or to, y'know, find a common enemy in the guy who waded into the middle of your argument trying to make both peace and the point that you're both right (and wrong). And you know what? If I can unite you both in a desire to lay off each other and instead fire off withering comments at me this holiday season, then, well, I'll consider this a job well done.

2024-12-19 02:09:12 +0000 UTCAll the movies on this poll are great! Super hard to choose one. I went with Holy Grail bc I think Monty Python has such a singular vibe. Without spoilers, the only thing I'd say it helps to know about it is that Monty Python's Flying Circus was a surrealist sketch comedy show from the late '60s/early '70s in which all the skits were very loosely connected by a running joke, framing device, or some other throughline. Similarly, the comedy troupe's first movie, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, has a very slightly disconnected but silly vibe that retains the energy of the show while still managing to (sort of) tell a story. Think of it as a long sketch comedy show with a theme and you'll be in the right mindset for it. There's really nothing else like it and it's one of those movies where you might end the movie going, "Wtf? That was weird" but then, days later, you'll find yourself randomly repeating quotes from it to each other and laughing. A lot of times, I know people will say that it helps to get the references from whatever movie you're reacting to if you've seen this movie or that movie first. With Holy Grail, the thing that'll make some of the references hit harder for you is if you know anything about medieval history (bc many of their "dumb" jokes are actually a lot smarter than they seem on the surface). That being said, you don't need to. It's perfectly silly and fun on its own and I think you two will really enjoy it.

2024-12-19 01:35:50 +0000 UTCAgreed. I would wager that most people who've seen and loved Airplane! have never seen Airport. Honestly, Airplane stands fully on its own (except for one or two references that are very much of the time). And, honestly, references should never be homework. All that being said, Airplane! is actually based on Zero Hour, not Airport. In fact, it's almost a line-for-line parody of Zero Hour, with many of the scenes and much of the dialogue being exactly the same. Fr. Check out a comparison between the two (there's a vid I saw not long ago on YT that puts scenes from each movie side by side). It's crazy how much Airplane! just straight-up lifted scenes and dialogue from Zero Hour without changing it. Even the character names are the same. They just added crazy stuff happening in the background and punctuated with jokes, but otherwise it's basically the same movie (other than Zero Hour not being a comedy).

2024-12-18 23:42:38 +0000 UTCThree slapstick parodies and one dry wit British comedy. I'm going with the odd man out and may this be your start into the Python movies.

2024-12-18 23:41:10 +0000 UTCYou were the one triggered by my opinion. Don't worry. Your oh so edgy hot take is losing the poll....badly.

2024-12-18 15:39:04 +0000 UTCOh no!! Only great comedies, each one in it's own way. Making us choose between these four movies is kinda crual ^^

2024-12-18 15:11:21 +0000 UTCI have never watched Airport and loved Airplane.... so I gotta disagree here.
N.T. Stars
2024-12-18 14:19:16 +0000 UTCIt would be a good idea to watch Airport (1970) before Airplane, otherwise you will miss a lot of references.
Mycenaeus .
2024-12-18 09:45:41 +0000 UTCI think you'll like Airplane more but I think your viewers will like watching your reaction to the weirdness of Monty Python more. Both would be fantastic if both is an option :)

2024-12-18 06:47:37 +0000 UTCYeahhh idk.. I'd rather them see Airplane. Holy grail is such an obscure subjective comedy that I think is a bit corny and overrated.

2024-12-18 06:46:54 +0000 UTCAll good satirical farces but Holy Grail is a great table setter for later exploration of the genre.
