Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom - Patreon Version

Hello! Okay, earlier this week we watched Raiders of the Lost Ark and absolutely loved it... so we figured we'd just go ahead and watch the second one and release it as an extra movie this week! Woo!

And in "Raiders" the number on the side of Jock's plane is "OB-CPO" (Obi-Wan/C3PO)

That's so fun! I can't believe we missed all the Easter Eggs!

Chandra

My dad insists he had a coworker that was the stunt man who played Willie Scott in the raft. He bragged about it all the time. Also, I'm devastated because I have 4 days off work BEFORE Indiana Jones and the Great Circle comes out. I'm super excited to get my hands on it.

By far the darkest Indiana Jones film with even Spielberg saying, "It was too dark, too subterranean, and much too horrific. I thought it out-poltered Poltergeist." Here's an interesting bit of trivia: In the U.S., this film and Gremlins led to the creation of the PG-13 rating. Many people felt both movies were too violent for a PG rating, but not violent enough for an R rating. Some believed that both films would have been rated R if Steven Spielberg's name hadn't been attached.

To answer your question from early in the movie: Vampire bats mainly feed on cattle and other livestock, and sometimes birds or other wild animals. They very rarely (if ever) bite humans. Unlike, say, a cow, I don't think most humans would stand still while a bat fed on them, so we're not really easy targets. As for the movie: You mentioned in your wrap-up that "Temple of Doom" was a lot darker than the previous Indy movie and it definitely was (notoriously so). According to George Lucas, the reason this one is so much darker is because he was going through a nasty divorce when he wrote it, thus you get metaphors like a man getting his heart ripped out through his chest and a shrill woman spending pretty much the whole movie being an annoying, shallow, gold-digger. Lucas was in a dark, angry place when he wrote this one and it def comes through in the tone of the movie. That being said, "Temple of Doom" was actually my favorite Indy movie when I was a kid but, as an adult, it's kind of lost that top spot. Mainly because Willie is very annoying whenever she's onscreen (same reason I can't watch Kim Bassinger movies anymore) and the "love story" between her and Indy makes zero sense. I mean, I know he's supposed to be like a 1930s James Bond wooing a new lady in every movie but, other than her looks, I'm not sure what he was supposed to be attracted to about her. She was just awful for all but about one minute of the movie, and then had a little reprise of awfulness at the end (for no reason other than so they could do the whip gag). Tbh, the idea that he's into her at all makes me lose a little respect for Indy, lol. On the bright side, since this is a prequel that takes place in 1935, by the time we get to "Raiders" in 1936, we know Willie is gone. So, y'know, faith in Indy's taste restored. And let's be real: Marion is SO MUCH better than Willie. Also, not to be that guy, but the casual racism/cultural insensitivity toward Indian people is a little wild. Rather than, y'know, doing any research, Lucas just went, "Yeah, and they eat monkey brains and eyeball soup and live baby snakes and bugs! Y'know, because they're foreign! AND they have voodoo dolls!" As a kid, it never occurred to me to think about stuff like that. As an adult... well, let's just say I don't think it aged as well as it could have. Still, the action was good, the set pieces were fun, Short Round is amazing, and I'm never not going to enjoy the minecart level (er, I mean, "scene"). I just remind myself that Lucas and Spielberg were doing an homage to the old serials he loved as a kid and those old serials were not exactly known for their accuracy or racial sensitivity, so... I'll just pretend it was an artistic choice and not Lucas being inadvertently ethnocentric and problematic. Your reaction though? Chef's kiss! No notes.

Favorite Easter Egg: When Indy, Willie, and Shortround escape in the car at the beginning of the movie, you can see from the sign over the door that they just escaped "Club Obi Wan"

Simone's Coconut Squire

This was so good. It always reminded me with the visuals, lighting and acting of a more adult version The Rocketeer. Which I highly recommend if you want a silly lighthearted action adventure movie. Thanks!

Yeah, Willie's annoying. She's no Marion, but once they're in Pankot the movie does NOT stop the tension! It's so hard for me to rank the movies for that reason, they all bring something different to the table! Thanks for doing this one so soon!

The Indiana Jones movies are the kind of movies I wish I was more into, and always wonder what's wrong with me because I'm not. Especially when I love action and adventure, and I love Harrison Ford. So, I'm giving these a pass, but I did listen to your thoughts, as always, and I'm glad you enjoyed this, and Raiders. Three Harrison Ford movies you two should watch: -The Fugitive -Air Force One -What Lies Beneath The Fugitive and Air Force One are both huge classics (Fugitive is a bigger classic out of the two), and you would love them. What Lies Beneath I haven't seen, but I've heard it's really good. I think it's a lesser known movie that didn't do as well as the other two, but I believe you would still enjoy it.

Raven Dark

This was my favorite movie when I was a kid!
