I love the copper for a kiss reference to Judas betraying Jesus (and River and Simone are "dead" and then back to life)

I know I'm several months behind here, but remember this quote from Jayne - "Just cause Mal says you're medic, don't make you part of the crew." Before the end of this episode, he didn't consider them part of the crew, he saw them as a danger TO the crew.

It's so true, that was super violent of River and really scary. You make a good point that it's easy to laugh off because it's Jayne, but if it was anyone else it would have been dealt with very differently.

They're still watching the series, so I'll be careful here. It's an interesting notion, but I don't see how that accounts for an episode like "Safe" where River knew that the little girl lost her voice when her mother tried to kill her and her sister, or the specifics of how the town leader came to power?

I always read her telepathy as just being hyperobservant thanks to the modifications they made to her and training or something. She takes sense data and is able to parse it very quickly and clearly.

As you picked up on: Jayne already told Mal what was going to happen when the money was good enough upfront and honestly. And now consider Jayne's time in the airlock: first he lies, then cops to it, rationalizes it, and then comes to terms with his fate. To Mal this is him not only 'learning his lesson' but showing remorse in his final moments and seeing himself as part of the group for once; he cares what they think of him, despite there being no advantage to him if he's dead. Jane's acceptance of the crew being an extension of the captain's trust and his strange want to be a part of the hierarchy means he must fit in by Mal's rule -- and knowing this realization has hit Jane is enough for Mal to let him continue and for things to work themselves out. Plus it's not like he's worse than anyone else on the crew, reliability wise. Kaylee is some wide eyed girl who has never seen anything beyond the limits of her small home town, Simon/River are giant red flags in any situation, Wash/Inara are both from the core themselves, Book is some kinda bona fide Alliance hero, and his right hand is now married to a core worlder. Things change for Mal and the browncoats, but he can at least trust a crew long enough to keep flying a little longer. As he said previously, "It's enough."

In case y'all don't realize it yet, the show wasn't just canceled after one season - it was canceled unexpectedly early into that first season. This is not a complete season. After his success with Buffy and Angel, and seeing how the new show was apparently hitting (creatively) on all cylinders, Joss Whedon was fully expecting a normal-for-the-time 20+ episode season, and probably multiple seasons, so he built in a number of tidbits of a larger story arc into earlier episodes expecting them to pay off down the road. Although he had an outline for the whole season, there were easily another 6-8 episodes (including a season finale) that weren't written yet, much less filmed, so there are threads - like why RIver cut Jayne (which, btw, is linked to another "huh?" scene with River, where she was tearing the labels off of food cans) - that just disappeared into the ether when the show abruptly ended. The movie "Serenity" will bring a closure for some main story lines that were interrupted by the cancellation, but you can only fit so much stuff in a two hour movie.

Whenever a show brings "psychic" into play, there is no telling what powers that person might have. But, so far, there isn't anything that River has said or done that couldn't be explained by her just being able to read people's minds and browse their memories.

I feel weird saying it. But I have empathy for Jayne. River sliced him open unprovoked with a butcher knife. And taunted him after. That's wild. Now she may or may not have psycho premonitions as to why but all he knows is he's sitting with his crew and she gashed him. It's funny 'cause it's Jayne. But imagine if that happened to your child, or your parent, or your pet. That's so absolutely not okay. And every time he voices the obvious danger he gets shot down. It's not cool to betray the captain and the crew. Mal made that wonderfully clear. But the writers did a great job giving his character legitimate cause.
