American Psycho - Patreon Version

Happy spooky Tuesday!
We're continuing with the horror/thrillers, and boy oh boy was this a wild one. I found myself thinking so many times throughout this movie "is this REALLY happening!?". We both really loved it and were super impressed by Christian Bale's performance. Here's hoping you all have fun watching along with us!

Hahaha omg yes! This!

I'm sorry so many of the movies and tv series are hard to find or don't work well for you! We'll definitely be watching Serenity once we finish Firefly, so you can at the very least look forward to that!

Chandra

I just watched it with you both for the first time as well. Not exactly sure what I just watched, but I think I like it???? haha

Paul De'Armond

The entire film, and moreso the book, are a commentary on 80s yuppie culture in NY. Whole thing is a send up and executed very well on screen, but the book is, obviously, more in depth in terms of Ellis' description of consumerism being the only escape from social and physical alienation. It's worth a read before a rewatch in my mind, and it's a pretty brisk 400~ pages that you can knock out very quickly. As far as what Bateman did or did not feel, that's up to you in how you want to read his actions and intention, but the one scene, to me, that suggests this is very much in the vein of going a bit peculiar in the face of near total intellectual and social isolation is the interaction between him and his secretary in his apartment (Chloe Sevigny). She is the only person in the entire movie that actually pays attention to his words, his mood, and the greater consequence of following through with things. He feels that she is real in the moment, that she has a nominal value to the world as a person in it, and he would feel bad about removing that person from the world as opposed to killing and destroying an empty vessel with nothing to offer. She did not fit in, her sincerity was anti-comformist -- though teetering on the brink of falling into the void like the rest by engaging in their empty non-culture. Her choice to leave is very telling, as the others choose to remain and partake despite the potential consequence of not even knowing who you're spending an evening with. Two things to leave you with here: 1) There are deleted scenes that show the various takes that Dafoe/Bale did against one another to make it more ambiguous as to whether or not they were in fact onto Bateman. Worth a watch. 2) Another purely selfish recommendation if I may: the woman that Bateman was having an affair with, miss Easter, is played by Samantha Mathis. A movie I think you two would dig down the line somewhere, with Christian Slater and Mathis, is Pump Up the Volume. Very much inline with the style of things that you two seem to enjoy, that's all I will say aside from the fact that Mathis was a top 5 screen crush for me growing up (hence the selfish rec). Apologies for the novel, my bad. Edit: Oh, Bale kino recs: Equilibrium would be the most up your alley (Reign of Fire is also kind of an interesting action flick of his), Prince of Jutland and Empire of the Sun hit similarly for him, and Metroland/Velvet Goldmine give you a good idea of how he came up in British cinema to snag American Psycho.

Okay, be honest, how many times have you snuck up on each other since seeing this film and shouted "HEY PAUL!"
