15 years after the Second Global War, the Federal Republic of Garath desperately needed a new tank. Two divisions in the Leonhardt corporation competed for the contract.
The requirements were; for the tank to be able to mount the L/50 120mm Smoothbore Cannon, an autoloader for said cannon and for it to have a crew of 3.
Armored / military doctrine at the time was based around border defense against a larger invading enemy force with expectations of heavy urban combat
Leonhardt Division 1 went for a more traditional turret + hull design; vehicle codename "Arbalest"
Leonhardt Division 2 went for a low profile, turret-less design, vehicle codename "Schattenfalke". Division 2's design ideology was for a a more "static" defense doctrine but with the ability to maneuver and relocate if the need arise. This design has limited range compared to the Arbalest since it carried less fuel, but made excellent concealed defenders with their low profile.
Ultimately the FRG decided to give the contract to the Arbalest as adopting the Schattenfalke would require a major doctrinal change that they deemed too much effort for minor gains. Despite losing the contract, the FRG Army had acquired about ~50 Schattenfalke EBTs for experimental and test bed prototypes for future tech / weapon development
