Halloween comic behind the scenes tidbits

Here are some behind the scenes tidbits from the Halloween comic that I thought might be interesting. :>

In the beginning I did some layout experiments which consisted of smaller versions of the comic pages on a bigger canvas. I soon found out though that this was somehow limiting me. There is a LOT of space on a single page and the smaller size of these page layouts made me not use that space efficiently and I ended up drawing everything too big and needlessly stretching out things over several pages.

Which is why I opted for one big page per canvas for layouting in the end. :V
That way I could also utilize the empty space next to the page to write down notes. :>

Here is how that would look like for page 10 for example.

Another issue I ran into early on was my rather limited expertise in perspective drawing especially architecture. I learned it a while back but nowadays I mostly draw characters so that skillset is suuuper rusty. I noticed these limitations as soon as I tried to draw the entry area of the mansion. When I was done with the first iteration I just thought to myself that Blender can do this way better than I so I made a 3D mockup with some free assets and light modeling. Then I traced over the mockup and slapped on some colour and textures. :>
I did this again for the overhead shot in the lounge.

That was me art-nerding for now! :D

Thank you! I am glad you enjoy them! :>

This is really cool seeing the behind the scenes! I love comics and what goes into making them, so it's neat seeing how you prioritize what to draw, and what gets a 3D model. A unique way to blend old and new techniques.

I think tracing can be a good learning tool if you use it to get a better hang of proportions and shape language in general. As long as you do not trace other people's art and say you did it! :D For finished pieces I generally do not trace anything but in this case I made an exception to save time and the only thing I was plagiarizing was my own Blender render. 😅 As for the canvas. I am using a light red brown for several reasons. -using pure white will alter the perception of other colours. They can appear darker and less chromatic than they really are -when doing digital art having a pure white canvas can be tiring for the eyes -and lastly my monitor is old and rubbish and the whites are so blown out that I literally can not see soft lines when I draw them.. 😓

So cool to see how it comes together! And makes me feel better about tracing people to make up for my lack of figure drawing skills. Just wondering, what color do you use for the canvas and why that over white?
