Changing the definitions of words is not unique to China. It seems like one of the primary "go-to" tools of politicians and activists in America as well. By subtly changing the traditional meaning of a word, especially over time, you create a significant population of voters who think they are fighting for or supporting a concept that they associate with the word without realizing the active definition has been changed. For example, who isn't (or shouldn't be) FOR liberalism in the classic sense? But the word "liberalism" as it is practiced now is far different from how it was thought of and practiced in the past. I consider myself a classical liberal but find myself at odds with a great many things about modern "liberalism." "Marxism/Communism" became "Socialism" and then "Socialism" became "Progressivism." etc. etc. etc. (Again... who doesn't want to Progress Forward?!?! You'd have to be a real jerk not to!). The human psyche is amazingly pliable and dependent on language. IF you can control the language you can control the thinking. And if you can control the thinking you control the person and their behavior. ..... But... like you said Chris... A rose by any other name... (It would have been cool if Shakespeare had said " A turd by any other name...") Finally, forgive me... Patreon does not allow paragraph breaks in the comments section.
