The bulk of the lighting's done, and just about all the colors are laid out. There are a bunch of fine details to paint in, but it'll probably only take one last session to finish!
As for the second image, in the last post I briefly explained why the black gutter around the WIP is there, and then also said I'd go into detail about it later. Well, it's officially Later.
In figure A, the brush stroke begins in a blank area of the canvas. In figure B, the brush stroke begins outside the canvas—except it's not technically a stroke yet. Sai tracks the cursor, but doesn't register the pressure and angle of my pen, nor does it calculate the direction of the stroke until the cursor has actually reached the canvas. This creates an awkward few pixels that aren't blended consistently with the rest of the stroke, because, far as the software's concerned, the stroke started inside the the blue patch, as opposed to just on its border. So, the gutter gives me space to start strokes outside of my true "canvas" as it were.
