New Character Creator Inquiry!

Hey guys! I had a question about the new Character Creator that I wanted to run by you as this particular subject is important to me and to the immersion of the game. I discussed this with a few patrons on Skype many, many months ago, but there was no official conclusion. It's time to remedy that! So the discussion's focus was about whether or not stats should be visible when creating your character. Seems like a no brainer, right? Well, I'm leaning toward hiding the stats and it's for the following reason(s).

1) The new character creator will have a more organic feel and I want the choices to be about your character's background, personality, skills, appearance and mood --- not what stats you'll get. I believe this will help with immersion into your character and the world.

2) A lot of more popular games don't show you what stats you get from the creation, for example, Violated Heroine, Tainted Elysium, Dungeons and Prisoners etc. It seems to be something a lot of people prefer.

So if you have any strong thoughts about this, I would love to hear what you guys think in the comments. In this particular poll, I'll probably lean toward the majority, but keep in mind even if it winds up that we don't put them in the new character creation, eventually the game's wiki (if someone decides to make one) will likely contain what each choice does so the extra curious could always look there (or just ask me).

That's a good argument, thank you for sharing your thoughts, Ver! I appreciate the insight. ^_^ So far it seems like the majority is agreeing with that assessment. To be honest, I have no problem showing stats if people want it. I just prefer choices to be made for the choice itself not the stat it gives, but that's just me! I'll look into your suggestion though (about asking the player if they'd like to see stats during the creation or not). Thanks again, Ver!

I think what works best here is giving people a chance to *review* their character and change their stats freely after the interactive character creation is done, the way games like Elder Scrolls and Fallout do it. But if you want the answered questions to have more of a narrative impact (e.g. by associating them with certain backgrounds), you can't really do that. In that case I really want to see at least the mechanical impact of what I'm doing - I hate guessing, it just makes me min-max even harder. Why not simply ask the player up front whether they want to see the stats? I also think that if you hide the stats during character creation, you should hide them *everywhere*. If hiding the stats during character creation just means I have to go through it 30 times to see what everything does, that's not fun. But I prefer just being able to see them, so I can build my character as I like and get the sense that I'm progressing.
