Raccoon with a Gun

My version of everyone's favourite gun-toting raccoon. The first character I've ever used for fur practice, both for the old particle system, and a few years later using the geonode version. He's been the testbed for so many of my firsts, and it's time to move him off of Patreon and onto Gumroad.

Rig Information

The rig has been built up and edited in 3.5, so I'm not sure about rig things in Blender 4.0. I'm sure everything will work fine, but be aware everything here is 3.5 tested.

Versions aside, it's all about the rig this time!. Different fur groups for the clothed and naked version are toggled via the Ranger Suit Toggle as seen in the previews. It's defaulted to off, since I assume most people want him naked (it's how I prefer him), but the option is there and it's among my best for outfit creation.

Other than my custom bones, the rig is standard Auto Rig Pro fanfare, with different control bones across the first 4 armature layers:

  1. Main pose bones on first
  2. Helper bones on second
  3. Genital controls on third
  4. Clothing toggle/controls on fourth

If you aren't sure what does what, try moving it! It doesn't usually break things, so it can't hurt.

Obligatory "Install rig_tools.zip and proxy_picker.py if you haven't already". It won't generate the rig properly if you don't/haven't previously installed them. Just treat them like any other addon.

Fur Information

Oh the fur, a good set of features that like to break every other time. If you want to have your viewport over 5fps, I recommend keeping the fur disabled in the viewport. It's only enabled in the render by default, but sometimes you wanna see it. It can break and go everywhere if you enable it after posing. Simple fix is to scrub forward/backward a frame, or move a bone and right click cancel it, better yet grab the fur in object mode and hit G, then right clik to cancel. If that doesn't work, save and reload. That last one has never failed me, but the others work often enough it should only need to happen during the most stubborn of fur explosions.

The fur issues are just a quirk of the system, but overall it's a great implementation of fur tech.

Main Material is a Base Colour and Roughness plugged into a Principled Hair BSDF, and I pretty much exclusively use Cycles. I didn't compatibility test it with eevee, probably should have, but Cycles is my baby and I find eevee to be a bit unruly and very trial and error, though I have had great success in the past.

Texture Information

They're 2K and 4K textures. No udims, but there are a lot of them, so I just hope I don't miss any of them. Easy way of getting them into the file is using the good old Find Missing files function under the External Data menu. Extract the zips to a place, find missing files, select the place with the files and bam, all the textures are loaded. Unless I forget one.

There is no included HDRi in the file, so things will look very pink unless you add your own, or disable the world and light your scene manually. Up to you.

Be sure to @ me on the socials if you make something with him. I want to see it, because it's cool to see my stuff in the wild. Makes it feel real, y'know?

Quality of Life Update!

The Tail Fur Boundary. A rather simple thing, but incredibly useful and I'm surprised I didn't think of it sooner. No more guessing if the fur's gonna clip, because now you know (approximately) where it is, without needing to enable the fur in the viewport!
