Standing in front of the old decrepit building, an ominous feeling built in Jackie’s gut. Next to her stood Caitlynn, twirling her platinum blonde hair on one finger, looking at her brunette friend expectantly.
“Well?” she asked, “Are you going to go in? That was the dare after all.”
“Shut up!” Jackie retorted, “I’m going to go, I-I just need a second.”
A game of truth or dare and too many drinks had led the pair to the old abandoned Arkham Nursery School, with typical scaredy-cat Jackie being given one simple task. She had to go inside and grab something from the playroom on the other end of the building.
The pair discovered earlier in the day that the small door for “Students” opened. It was a miniature 3-foot tall entrance meant for the nursery’s inhabitants. At the time neither girl could bring themselves to go in, but some liquid courage and a dare changed that.
Still, the atmosphere of the darkened building left a sense of dread running through Jackie as she approached the front entrance of the building. She adjusted her glasses and approached the small red door. She had to drop to her knees just to reach the tiny doorknob. A loud creak signaled her entrance as she pushed open the door to enter, crawling in carefully.
The inside of the nursery was covered in dust and debris. The bright yellow walls were visible even in the darkened reception area. The nervous brunette fumbled for the small flashlight in her pocket, illuminating the area immediately in front of her. To her surprise the room she stood in was kept fairly neat. Despite the layers of dust covering everything there wasn’t a paper or tile out of place.
“This place has been empty for like ten years, but the walls and floor are in perfect condition?” Jackie noted, stepping deeper into the building. The immaculate state of the building continued as she moved further in and she found herself looking around curiously.
The caricatures on the walls depicted strange things not necessarily appropriate for the building’s intended inhabitants; Skeletons out of a 1950s Halloween special led a parade of ghosts and monsters in a repeating trim along the center of the walls like a center stripe of horror. “No wonder this freaky place closed, I wouldn’t leave a kid here.
Jackie turned a corner and secretly hoped she was getting closer to the playroom. Something about this place seemed off. It wasn’t just the weird decor–there was a feeling of tension looming in the air.
*Click Clack*
From behind Jackie heard the distinct sounds of footsteps. “Did Caitlynn follow me in?” she wondered. She hadn’t taken all that long yet, so she wasn’t sure why she would come in after her. Besides, that wasn’t the sound of Caitlynn’s high tops–that sounded distinctly like a pair of high heels.
Jackie tensed up and pressed herself flush against the wall, clicking her flashlight off. A sense of dread came over her. “Hello?” she called out shakily.
There was no response, the clicking of heels against the floor only getting progressively louder and approaching her position with a quickened pace. Jackie, not wanting to get in trouble, took off down the hallway, bolting for some kind of hiding spot.
From behind she heard the steps stop and despite her best judgment, she looked back. The flashlight was still off but she could see the vague outline of a person wearing a dress. The strangest part of them was the curved black things jutting out of their head like horns.
Jackie turned a corner and lost sight of the figure, but a strange low roar could be heard in the walls all around her.
“What the hell is going on!?” she asked herself, taking another turn. After the third left turn and around 10 solid minutes of running a thought occurred to her–she should have made it to the baby room by now because there was no way this building was this big. At some point she should have circled around or met a dead end based on her trajectory but she never did.
The hallway seemingly extended into infinity and Jackie had to stop after all that running to catch her breath. She was a pretty enthusiastic bookworm and this was far more exercise than she normally got. After several deep breaths the click-clacking high heels resumed behind her.
She looked up just in time to see that same shadowy figure turn the corner behind her, now walking with an extended hand as if reaching out for Jackie. A soft, slightly malicious voice filled the hallway. “Welcome to the Nursery, I see you’re a new student. Please come with us so we can admit you.”
Jackie backed away from the approaching form slowly, “I’m not a student!” she yelled.
“Lying is not tolerated!” boomed the figure, "You entered the student door! Do not be a naughty fibber or else we will spank your bottom!”
Jackie turned and bolted again. All around her the endless labyrinth of hallways shifted and groaned, like a creature breathing with her trapped inside of it. She wasn’t sure how, but eventually she came across a doorway and to her luck it led into the main room of the nursery. Jackie bolted in and looked around for a hiding spot.
There were cribs and changing tables lining the walls, high chairs sat in one corner, and toys were scattered all around. She chose the most solid object to obscure her form–a large wooden changing table with a close view of the doorframe. She waited for the figure to follow her in and sure enough, the clacking of heels reappeared. The shadowy figure walked in moments behind her and was looking around the room curiously.
Seeing that there was enough room to escape Jackie bolted through the door, grabbing up one of the rattles from the ground to prove she’d done the dare. She wouldn’t want anyone coming back in here, she doubted anybody would believe her anyway.
The figure, who was still in the room, made no moves to chase after the girl, instead flashing a smile with her sharp teeth. “Now the game can begin.” she said with a chuckle.
