Tom's Open Map License - Use my battlemaps in your commercial products for Free!

Tom's Open Map (TOM) License

Starting today, I am making all of the free versions of my battlemaps available for commercial use! Choose from over 500 maps from my library to use in your TTRPG product. New maps are added every week!

There are a few terms to adhere to, but otherwise this is open to anyone. You can use the maps as reference in your adventure modules or rulebooks, as part of live streamed games or as a DM for hire, and you may also distribute the maps in digital or physical format.

You do not need to be a patron, subscriber, or customer to use this license, and you do not need to inform me if you are using this license (although I would love to see what you make if you want to share), however you will need to follow the terms listed below.

Terms of Use

• (1) This License grants world-wide, non-exclusive, royalty free rights to use the free (watermarked) versions of my battlemaps in commercial products, so long as the following terms are met.
• (2) This license only includes my battlemaps (1inch=5ft scale). Other artwork and content such as town/city scale maps, region maps, illustrations, tokens and assets are not included.
• (3) The Hi-Resolution versions of my battlemaps (without watermarks) are not included, if you would like to use those, please see my full commercial licensing terms HERE.
• (4) Any battlemaps that were not solely created by me (eg part of a collaboration or work I have commissioned) are not included. This will be noted in the relevant posts on my Patreon.
• (5) Any battlemaps created by me as a commercial commission for a client, but also released on Patreon, are not included. This will be noted in the relevant posts on my Patreon.
• (6) You may not remove or obscure the Tom Cartos watermark in anyway.
• (7) You may not crop, add to, or edit the battlemaps in any way, other than desaturating them for use in non-colour products.
• (8) You may not use my battlemaps in the minting of NFTs or training of AI. Nor can they be used in any product that also uses NFTs or AI generated content, or by any company that also uses NFTs or AI generated content in any of their other products, or actively supports their use in any way.
  AI Generated Content is any content that uses programs like MidJourney or ChatGPT to generate entire images or text. AI tools such as image re-scalers or enhancers applied to your own original creations are allowed. Any AI tools based solely on open-source or licensed content are also allowed.
  If you are not sure if the tool uses licensed or open-source content, you may assume that it does not.
• (9) You may not use my battlemaps in any works that may be considered hateful or harmful towards any group of people.
• (10) You may not use my battlemaps in any way that suggest I endorse your product.
• (11) This license is non-transferable (you can’t relicense or sublicense my maps to someone else).
• (12) If you are distributing the maps in physical format, they must be no larger than their intended size (ie number of grid squares in inches).
• (13) You must include a credit for me as the artist (see Accreditation below).
• (14) You must make reasonable efforts to ensure these terms are adhered to. I retain the right to have my content removed from your works at your expense if the terms have not been met and no reasonable effort to adhere to them was made. If you are concerned that you may be inadvertently violating any of these terms, please contact me in advance of publishing the works for clarification.
• (15) This license is perpetual and irrevocable. If this license is updated in the future, you may continue to use older versions of the license if you prefer.

Accreditation

If you are using any of my battlemaps for any commercial reason under the TOM (Tom’s Open Map) license, I require that you do the following:

• Include my name in the products credit section as cartographer or some other relevant title (eg Cartography by Tom Cartos, or Battlemaps by Tom Cartos) and a link to my Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/tomcartos) and/or Website (https://www.tomcartos.com/)
• If the battlemap is being posted online in a digital marketplace, my name and a link (as above) must be included in the product description section.

Where can I get the maps?

There are a few ways you can browse and download my maps.

• Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomcartos(best way to see my most recent content, but not a good UI for searching past content)

• Go to https://www.tomcartos.com/map-gallery and browse my battlemap library. When you find a map you like, click the orange ‘Free Version’ button to be directed to the download page on Patreon. (best way to browse all of my content)

• Download all of my free content here - https://mab.to/Br3eU06a9J9Gi/eu1 (This folder is over 2GB in total and constantly growing, so you may need to download in parts. See this guide on how to do so)
