Background

Xandria’s Sanctum is a small settlement hundreds of feet above the ground in a grove of ancient Gigaswood trees. It is the spiritual home to a group of mages and druids known as the Arcadium Arborus, who work together to better understand the intrinsic links between nature and magic. Most of the group carry out their studies in far flung reaches of the world, but they all return here regularly to update on another on their findings and ensure their knowledge is safely stored.

The Sanctum is named after the forest spirit who guided Caelum Ouranos, the Arcadium’s founder and head scholar, to the grove over a hundred years ago. Much of the arcane knowledge discovered by the members is only kept here, and if it fell into the wrong hands could be used to do great harm to the world. For this reason, Caelum and Xandria maintain a series of protective spells and illusions over the trees, keeping outsiders from finding them. The only way in or out is via the arcane waypoints, which are connected to magical pendants carried by the rest of the Arcadium.

The trees here are evergreen, even in winter, although for a couple of weeks around the harvest moon every year the leaves turn to brilliant shades of orange, red and gold. All of the members of the Arcadium usually return around this time for an annual gathering. This is also the time when nature and magic are most intertwined in the grove and strange things can happen.

Design Notes

Xandria’s Sanctum 01 The Grove

• 01 – Waypoint – An arcane gate waypoint to and from the sanctum. This enables the Arcadium members to easily travel to and from the Sanctum.
• 02 – Outer Deck – Wooden decks around each tree trunk allow for easier access, but it is still treacherous for those not used to such heights.
• 03 – Caretakers Abode – Only Caelum lives permanently in the Sanctum in order to maintain the protective illusion, but he is too busy for general upkeep. Instead, a millennia old wood elf named Taeral works as a caretaker. However, in her old age she is more interested in growing plants than replacing rotten planks.
• 04 – Meeting Room – This is where Arcadium Arborus members meet when they convene at the grove. When all members are present, they use the Orrery instead.
• 05 – Laboratory – Studies are carried out on exotic plants with inherent magical properties.
• 06 – Library – All of the knowledge gathered by the group is recorded and safely stored here.
• 07 – Dining Terrace
• 08 – Kitchen -Taeral may not be much of a cleaner, but she is a great cook.
• 09 – Meditation Room
• 10 – Bedroom
• 11 – Hammock Dorms
• 12 – Stairs up to the Observatory level

Xandria’s Sanctum 02 Observatory

• 14 – Upper Deck – Another hundred or so feet above the grove, this is the highest tree in the forest and gives unbroken views for hundreds of miles. The protective illusory spells keep the structures and occupants hidden.
• 15 - Waypoint – An arcane gate waypoint to and from the sanctum. This enables the Arcadium members to easily travel to and from the Sanctum.
• 16 – Orrery – Caelums focus is on the planets and how their alignment effects magical currents.
• 17 – Caelum’s Study - A few years ago a branch started growing through the floor. Caelum just integrated it into the furniture.
