Background

A forgotten forge lies hidden in the mountains. A new group of adventurers has heard that unique magical weapons can be created there, but the forge lies dormant and there is currently no Master Smith to work it. Upon first visiting the forge the party will find it dirty and long abandoned, but if they choose to investigate they will find a cache of information on how to restart it, as well as a few creatures who are currently calling it home.

The first place they need to visit Is known as the ‘Inner Fires’, located further up the mountain near its volcanic heart. They will have to overcome a series of challenges, as well as the intense heat of the flowing lava, in order to open up the gates that allow the molten rock to flow towards the forge and give it the energy it needs to activate. Once this is completed they will need to hunt down one of the fey to rediscover the lost knowledge of how to forge the blades.

Design Notes 

This map set was commissioned by Midgardia, and many of the designs and ideas listed below are theirs. These maps will be used for an adventure module they are writing. When the adventure is complete it will go on sale and half the proceeds will be going to the Forging Heroes Society, a charity that helps underprivileged young children learn life skills by playing D&D. Primordial Forge 01 – Apprentice Forge

• 01 – Entrance Lobby – Two water fountains with pumps for fire related emergency.
• 02 – Dining Area
• 03 – Master Smiths Quarters – Bed, Display Cabinet & Workdesk
• 04 – Apprentice Quarters – 4 Beds, Wardrobes & Study table
• 05 – Apprentice Forge – Central forge, 4 practice anvils. A few other tools and pieces of smithing equipment around the room. Storage nooks in the back. Two doors leading to 06 can only be opened by turning both cranks at the same time.
• 06 – Leads down to 07

Primordial Forge 02 – Master Forge

• 07 – Leads up to 06
• 08 - Heat Transfer Room – Keeps the upper levels from getting too hot when the lava is flowing.
• 09 – Display Area – Master Forged weaponry on display
• 10 – Storage Room 
• 11 – Cavern – Accessed by a partially collapsed wall behind the display cabinet. Access is initially hidden from site.
• 12 – Master Forge – The Rune Forge and Rune Anvil can be used by a master craftsman to forge magical weapons, at least when the lava flow is running underneath. Large carved runes on either side of the forge mean ‘Protection’ and ‘Destruction’ reminding all who come here of the duality of the craft. Runes on the forge and anvil themselves tell the story of the previous master smiths, and imbue the equipment with the necessary enchantments to create magical weaponry.

Primordial Forge 03 – Inner Fires

• 13 – Entrance – Carved Bronze Doors
• 14 – Key Chest 1 – A key is needed to exit this room to 17. There are 3 keys, one in each chest on 14,15 & 16. The key in 14 is in the chest on top of a seemingly undamaged rug despite the extreme heat. This is a Rug of Smothering.
• 15 – Key Chest 2 - As an alternative to fighting the rug, an athletics check can be made to cross the broken stone pillars to this chest.
• 16 – Key Chest 3 -As an alternative to fighting the rug, a perception check can be made to find the hidden door to this chamber.
• 17 – Leap of Faith – This gap appears to be 20ft wide, but is in fact only 5ft wide. The last 15 ft are an invisible floor.
• 18 – Don’t Look Back – 4 inert statues sit inset into the wall. Any PC who looks backwards after passing the statues will be attacked by 2 creatures hiding behind them.
• 19 – The Caldera- Suspended above the lava on 4 pillars, this platform has no sides. A mechanism on the far side (20) can be activated to open the gates (21) and allow the lava to flow to 12 to start the Rune Forge. To unlock the mechanism, 3 pressure plates need to be stepped on. This will also activate the portal in the center, summoning fire creatures. 
• 20 – Gate Control Mechanism -To open the gates, the party will need to spend 1 minute with the mechanism after unlocking it, while being attacked by the fire creatures.
• 21 – Lava Gate – Once opened, the lava will flow to 12 to activate the Rune Forge
