Commercial Licensing Information

As a general rule, all of the content uploaded to my Patreon page is published under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 so you are free to use and adapt this content as much as you like for personal projects, and you may share materials with the players at your table for use in your game. Don't sell any of my products, or any work that includes my products, without my explicit permission. If you would like to purchase a commercial license for any of my products, or use my materials for promotional purposes, please contact me.

Certain Patreon Tiers get additional allowances. Please note that to make use of these allowances, you must not have a monthly pledge limit, or your limit must be set to no lower than 4x the tier pledge amount. These allowances only apply while you are a paying Patron.

Traveller Tier (US$1 per map set, US$4+ per month)

You can use any of the maps that your pledge gives you access to in games that you stream or record and publish online. You can also use any of them in games that you charge to run.

Builder Tier (US$2 per map set, US$8+ per month)

You can use any of the maps and assets that your pledge gives you access to in games that you stream or record and publish online. You can also use any of them in games that you charge to run.

Additionally, you can use any of my assets in your own maps or other creations that you intend to publish or sell. Please include a credit for me as the artist and a link to my patreon page https://www.patreon.com/tomcartos

Adventurer Tier and above (US$3+ per map set, $US12+ per month)

You can use any of the maps, assets or character tokens that your pledge gives you access to in games that you stream or record and publish online. You can also use any of them in games that you charge to run.

Additionally, you can use any of my assets in your own maps or other creations that you intend to publish or sell. Please include a credit for me as the artist and a link to my patreon page https://www.patreon.com/tomcartos

You can use the watermarked versions of my maps (available in the 'Free' posts) in adventure modules you intend to publish. Please include a credit for me as the artist and a link to my patreon page https://www.patreon.com/tomcartos where they can get the high resolution Print and VTT maps.

Please send any adventure modules to me in advance of them being published. At that time I will have the option for the maps to be removed if I feel they are being used inappropriately.

Roll20 Marketplace Purchases

Maps and assets purchased on the Roll20 Marketplace can also be used in streams, online videos and "DM for hire" paid games. They cannot be used for published or paid materials.

Additional Information

This licensing agreement does not cover any works that are created as part of a collaboration, such as the Adventure Modules & Supplements by DMDave or Tavern Tales,  the group collaboration projects such as Behold the Tarrasque, Cycle of Cerberus or  L'Arséne's Ludicrous Larceny as those projects include content that is the intellectual property of the original creator.

You may not distribute any of maps, assets or tokens as standalone artwork for any reason without my explicit permission.

My materials may not be used in any project that I deem to be overtly harmful, derogatory or profane. I retain the right to have them removed at any time if I believe this is the case.

If you do use any of my materials in your stream, filmed game or published material let me know. I'd love to see it!

If you have questions about any of this information, let me know.

Yes, that section only refers to using my maps, not my assets. If you cancel you can no longe make new content, but you do not need to remove content made while you were a patron.

Tom Cartos

Just to check - this part only refers to if we're using the actual maps, not if we're using your assets to make our own maps, right? "Please send any adventure modules to me in advance of them being published. At that time I will have the option for the maps to be removed if I feel they are being used inappropriately." Also, if I cancel the subscription (not likely, but wanting to clarify to ensure I'm understanding the full scope of the agreement), is the effect of the allowances "ceasing to apply" that I can no longer make new adventures using your assets, or that I would have to pull adventures currently using your assets from sale?

Michael Chester

Whichever Patreon account you plan to post from will need to be a patron of mine at the correct tier. However you that new account doesn't need to wait a month before posting.

Tom Cartos

These maps would appear first on another Patreon channel, then on Roll20 Marketplace and other platforms. Is that OK? Or should I patronize you from my other Patreon site? Thank you.

Hi Zoltan, so long as you are adhering to the other terms as well, then yes you have met the requirements.

Tom Cartos

Hi Tom! I would like to create and sell maps using your assets. Adventurer is my current Tier on Patreon since January 31st. I would publish the first map on March 1st. Can I do this? Have I met the requirements? Thank you, Zoltan

👍 thanks!

Torchlight Press

At the moment, variant maps are not covered by the commercial license, only the versions that appear in the free watermarked maps.

Tom Cartos

Hey Tom, just looking for some clarification on something. The license text advises "You can use the watermarked versions of my maps (available in the 'Free' posts) in adventure modules you intend to publish.", but the variants aren't available in the Free posts. Should we just downscale the variant image so that it's lower resolution and put your watermark on it?

Torchlight Press

Yes, that is correct. Currently my commercial licensing requires an ongoing patronage while the product is live. I am looking into some other options at the moment, but I have to be careful to not allow people to use my products commercially after only signing up for a month and then leaving. If I were to ever have to end my Patreon for some reason, you would still be allowed to keep your product live. I don't offer one time deals, essentially because to price them correctly would make them far too expensive for most indie developers. In the case of profanity or potentially inappropriate or harmful subject matter, it is best to discuss this with me via direct message on Patreon, or via email tomartos.creations@gmail.com

Tom Cartos

Thanks for the quick response. Just to clarify, that would mean that the licensing is an ongoing kinda thing, not a one-time deal. (is there an opportunity for one-time deals? (easier for indie devs))As long as my software is available using your assets commercially, I have to remain a patron under the Builder Tier (+attribution links) for the same period of time? An additional question (and I apologize if this isn't the appropriate place to post): My questions above are basically in regards to a potential commission I may be doing. This commission involves a game that may be considered profane. How can I determine if it is something you may or may not be ok with?

PeaPu

Hi PopotoMopoto, so long as you remain a patron and include the correct attribution and links, it would work the same

Tom Cartos

Was wondering, how would the licensing work if I wanted to publish a map using your assets for a videogame?

PeaPu

Hi Patrícia, so long as you don't have a monthly limit set on your pledge (or the limit is higher than 4x per month) then you can use my assets for maps you make to sell. You will need to include a credit for me and a link to my patreon along with the maps. This can be in a text file included with the maps, on the page they are purchased from, in a PDF packaged with the maps, or any other way you like.

Tom Cartos

Hi Tom, my current tier is Forgemaster, I want to know if I can use your assets to make maps in Dungeondraft. The maps will be sold.

Patrícia Brito

Thanks for the response Tom, it was the first option I just wanted clarification.

Steven Whitelock

Hi Steven , it depends what you are intending to publish. If you just want to use my assets in your own maps, then you would need to pledge at the 'Builder' tier or higher. If you want to use my Free (watermarked) maps in your own adventure module PDF or book, then you would need to be at the 'Adventurer' tier or above. You would only need to contact me in advance if you are using this option. In either case, you should not set your monthly limit lower than 4.

Tom Cartos

So if your looking at publishing and selling we need to contact you, and pledge the 12 dollar tier? I'm just trying to clarify as I'm looking to eventually publish and sell my maps. But I don't want to break a license agreement when/if I decide to take that plunge.

Steven Whitelock

Thanks just wanted to be sure :)

Chris Valentine

Hi Chris, this is really only for adventure modules that include my maps. Any maps you make with my assets don't need to be sent to me.

Tom Cartos

Hello. I'm now in the $4 a creation tier, I see you wish to be sent maps before they are sold to see if they are used inappropriately. Are you meaning the watermarked ones or anything using any assets. That appears to be in the section about watermarked but i wanted to be sure. for example I may have a map that only uses the windmill blades.

Chris Valentine

Hi Arri, I think there may be one or two colour variants on Roll20 that aren't on Patreon, but in general the Roll20 packs are made from my Patreon packs, but packaged differently due to the minimum pricing on Roll20. As a patron you can use any of them under the Patron commercial licensing agreement.

Tom Cartos

Are there material differences between what is in the Roll20 asset packs, and your Patreon material? Before I found you on Patreon, I bought 7 of your clutter packs, and was wondering if I should a) bother making dungeondraft packs of them for my use, and, if yes, then specially mark them as separate from the ones as being under a different license?

Arri McElrath

Hi Midgardia, It's ok, I haven't really had any specific rules up until now, but quite a lot of people have been asking so I thought it would be best to create a set of guidelines. The commercial aspect for the assets is intended more for people selling maps with my assets on them, or for those whose streams are a primary source of income. I would be happy for you to use your custom maps with my assets on them in your streams at the $4+ level.

Tom Cartos

I was not aware you didn't allow use of maps on streams, oh no! I always try my best to give proper credit when maps are used on stream, and have probably used a couple in our games, and definitely streamed with maps I've made using your assets. So if I understand correctly, if I want to stream Mad Mage with the maps I've made that include your assets, I have to pledge $8 a month?

Midgardia
