As far as I know, Ambrose, Spielberg, and Hanks relied too heavily on the first-hand accounts of the people they DID contact. (More thorough historians should know to corroborate personal anecdotes with other anecdotes, records, and sources before publishing it as fact.) And some of the people they HAD contacted remembered going to a funeral for an Albert Blithe in 1948. Turns out there was ANOTHER Albert Blithe who died in the 101st Airborne. Which makes the 'James Francis Ryan' vs. 'James Frederick Ryan' mix-up Spielberg added in Saving Private Ryan somewhat ironically prescient, in my opinion. As Clark mentioned in his comment, the Albert Blithe depicted in the show went on to have a distinguished army career and life beyond WWII.

Regarding Blithe: The members of Easy Company interviewed by Ambrose had lost touch with him and thought he died in 1948 from his wound. The family became aware of the false claim after the release of the miniseries and came forward with the facts. Ambrose corrected the information in subsequent editions of his book, however HBO has never corrected the miniseries. Blithe actually also served in the Airborne during the Korean War, and was awarded both a bronze and silver star. He died in 1967 while on active duty in Germany as a Master Sergeant in the Army and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full honors.
