This is a favorite movie of mine—I’d probably rank it in my top 3. I’m so glad you got to watch it! It really does feel like a show, with the daughter, the grim reaper, the driver, and the separate love interests. Yet Michael Mann does an exemplary job of blending it all into one epic 3-hour thriller. The way he plays De Niro and Pacino off each other, yet also brings them together throughout the movie, is masterful. I slept on this movie for so long. The first time I saw it was back in 2011, during movie days with my roommate. We had our series Sundays, Western Wednesdays, Thriller Thursdays, Fantasy Fridays, and more. One Thursday, it was his turn to choose, and he asked, “What about a heist-thriller featuring De Niro and Pacino?” That really brings back good memories. Needless to say, I’ve been hooked ever since. Now there’s even talk about a sequel—from Mann himself! I know there’s a book, but I can’t wait to see what that’s about. There are so many youtube videos analyzing the shootout scene, and I totally get why. One cool observation I noticed in one of those videos is that it plays out almost like military versus police. The “crew” works together as a smaller, coordinated force attacking a larger but less prepared police presence, yet they’re also constantly retreating from the detectives who are chasing them. The way they move and lay down cover fire really does feel military—it’s a standout moment in the film.
