I know what you mean - even though I enjoy the film, it's feels like it's missing something. I always thought Edgar Wright being part of it would have helped fix some of that (no slight to Mr. Mottola intended), but you're right, it's also something in the script. It feels like one of those drafts that went through a bunch of revisions (no idea if it did), because while it was pretty rote and tight, there was still space somehow for more. Makes me wonder what the first draft was... Agree on the references too - I think I say in the reaction that you can't use the Jaws line, because it always bumped me as so distinctly not-sci-fi. But after editing this one, I realized HOW many Spielberg references they dropped and it made me laugh wondering if they added them all in to convince him to do his cameo. But I'm with you, with Pegg and Frost's talents, I hoped for more to the story than what we got. (sorry for the delayed response - was buried getting the YT cut done)

This feels like Mottola was handed a cast and knew he had to jump on it and all he had was a script idea from when he was 25, given how dated the sci-fi references were (I know Simon Pegg & Nick Frost are given writing credits, but did it feel at all like anything Pegg has written?). It's got 'drop reference and wait for laughs' energy which feels lazy. It doesn't snap like 'Galaxy Quest' (which was 12 years earlier), doesn't have style like 'Mars Attacks' (15 years earlier), certainly doesn't evoke the feeling of E.T. It was kind of nothing.
