DUNE (2021) | FIRST TIME WATCHING | Full Movie Reaction

Comments

OK. Seen the reaction. As always, a pleasure to listen to you. A couple of (NON-spoilery) comments to your thoughts/ questions: - Dune was published in 1965 and is basically the cornerstone of sci-fi. George Lucas was heavily inspired it by it when writing Star Wars as well as many other popular sci-fi franchises. - David Lynch's movie tried to cram the whole book in one movie which is an impossible task. Even Villeneuve leaves plenty out as the lore is enormous. Part 1 and Part 2 are the first book. Part 2 will give you the payoffs. - This ain't Marvel - no post credit scenes anywhere ;) - Regarding low tech: Dune takes place around 24-25 thousand years into the future. Around 10K years before, there was an AI uprising which enslaved humanity for many years. Hence the perception of people towards AI has changed and advanced technology is banned. - Regarding "why people carrying blades not guns" - the shields can stop an object moving very fast. You can penetrate a shield by moving an object slowly through it. - Worms travel through sand, so big rock structures would be safe - Regarding Baron "does he have legs" - The Baron is a really big and heavy guy, he uses these balloon suspensors to support his body so he "floats" around on those.

We'll keep it very general as they haven't watched part 2 yet, but just as a counter, I loved Herbert's Dune, and I think Denis did a splendid job, especially in part 2. I seriously doubt he had any studio influence here as he talked many times why he made the changes he made, and I think they actually work really well. Yes, some different paths but Denis also always said that he purposefully wasn't adapting the book 1 to 1, but rather the spirit, the message, the intent, and I can't see how this has been altered. But hey, we'll talk more after they have seen part 2 ;)

I've read the first three books of Frank Herbert's Dune series several times, and the last three once through. Denis was up against it to take on such a challenging adaptation, but I'm afraid he didn't do as good a job adapting as Peter Jackson did with LotR. Dune 1 goes pretty smoothly, but frankly I have major issues with Dune 2. Denis altered the characterizations so severely it undermines a central theme of the books. I suspect it must've been studio interference somewhere in the process, because he started clean and it got scrambled halfway through the 2nd movie. Maybe Denis felt he had to compromise with some studio notes to get funding for however many movies he wants to make. But maybe that kind of compromise isn't worth it to end up with a flawed adaptation. As it stands, Dune 2 puts Denis' series (so far) in 3rd place for Dune productions for me.
