I think in the second act, we see Dr. Madden really drop the ball. He explains that he's never seen a patient lose as much memory as Diana then kinda' just leaves Dan to figure it out all by himself. It's pretty reckless and definitely intentional on the show's part. The doctor should have had conversations with Dan about how he wanted to approach the subject of the memory loss rather than carelessly dropping that bomb during a session, then dismissing her for the weekend(?). If he had talked to Dan at all, he probably would have recognized how Dan's avoidant tendencies would hinder/affect Diana's recovery. I don't think the intention on the writer's part is to villainize Dr. Madden here; rather, it's meant to highlight the imperfections of the healthcare system. The doctor is truly doing his best to help, as is Dan, but at the end of the day, they are people and are bound to make mistakes.
