If you're interested in how the musical came together and all these different versions, you can find the concept album and Canadian live album on Spotify. Plus, there is a book by Anaïs Mitchell herself if you really want to get into the nitty gritty of the lyrics and story.

2024-11-09 08:26:23 +0000 UTCOh, the version of "Way Down Hadestown" you watched is from the earlier version of the show that ran in Canada - not the Broadway one with the full cast you've heard so far. There are differences in the instrumentation as well, so before posting your video to YouTube I would highly recommend looking up the Broadway version and reacting to that one as well before you get flamed in the comments. 😄One *major* difference is that Orpheus is much more outspoken and angry in this version of the play - most of his lines from this song were given to Hermes in the Broadway show. The creator/composer/writer Anaïs Mitchell has talked about how she had trouble nailing the character of Orpheus down and making the audience fall in love with him, and upping his innocence and purity ended up being the key. (Joined the Patreon specifically for this musical - I've been a fan since the concept album days, so I'm very familiar with all the different iterations.)

2024-11-08 14:02:50 +0000 UTCThe vibe of Hadestown was loosely inspired by Great Depression era New Orleans. You can kind of think about it like those old oppressive factory or mining towns. So the "train" kinda takes the place of the river Styx.
