He views himself as the "man" of the relationship and pushes Whizzer into the role of housewife (which Whizzer clearly doesn’t enjoy). Marvin thinks that since he is the man, he is the smart one, he interprets Whizzer’s win as a direct attack to his masculinity and a loss of control in their relationship which is why he breaks up with him.

2024-10-14 21:45:27 +0000 UTCfirst time commenting here, but i wanted to say that falsettos is one of my favorite musicals of all time, so i'm excited to see you reacting to it. the first time i watched it, i definitely had to sit and processes, and rewatching it will make more sense haha. people have probably said this already, but if not, falsettos is actually the combination of two one-act musicals, originally a part of the marvin trilogy-- not too important but can maybe be a fun fact. also, something that i personally think is important to keep in mind while reacting, and what is one of the big reasons for this musical having the impact that is has had, is the time period that the musical was originally made (original act 1 of this musical came out in 1981). as far as representation of queer people, relationships, and non-traditional family structures, it was one of the first to show the complexities that exist.
