Episode 59 - There Is Always Hope

On today's episode of Acid, we discuss our time at school and further the discussion of subjectivity in art.

NOTE: Towards the end of the episode, the discussion becomes very serious about certain topics that can be intense for some. However, we feel the discussion is important for people to hear and we hope can help offer some solace exploring it in this way.

Enjoy.

Reading the Dune series really radicalized me against stagnation. I remember when that doc Free Solo came out a few years back, I argued with people about his girlfriend. I was like she is basically the villain of this story. He had the potential to achieve true greatness. He was driven and disciplined and all she did was complain about how dangerous free soloing is. It really is astonishing how people tend to want to extinguish the drive for greatness in others. Every time I listen to your podcast I get the urge to leave a comment and then realize that I’m basically just reiterating what you said. But appreciate you both. Also, really been loving your essays.

My college experience wasn't too bad. I did have this instructor, who I believe I mentioned before, who never heard of 8 1/2. He was like a YouTube critic, assessing films based on nitpicks and plot holes like cinemasins. What's worse is that he would complain about the terrible quality of contemporary films, yet when we would mention a newer film that we liked, he never heard of them either. It's just odd to me how someone who claimed to love films and cared about the state of them would not actively seek out works historical, global, and even contemporary. Other than that I met some cool people, made some friends, and even learned quite a bit. It did help me to get some jobs as well so I certainly don't regret it.
