Whatever Happened to... Lightning Round?

(Okay sorry this post took so long, I'm actually re-writing it because Patreon apparently ate it the first time!) So, I'm changing Lightning Round. Or getting rid of it? Or something. Basically, I'm turning the wheel and gently steering my channel in a more focused direction. I've been having second thoughts about this specific show format for a little while (You can probably tell, as Lightning Round has gotten progressively weirder), but really started re-thinking things after my Talos Principle episode. There were some comments on that video that were fairly critical (not that they were without merit), and it really made me start considering where I wanted to take my channel. Along comes Rosemary West's House of Fortunes. Ultimately the game isn't too fascinating, but it was quirky enough for me to want to talk about it. The script was too long for LR, though, and too short for an Original. If I cut the script down to fit LR, it would be all facts, no funny. If I stretched it to a "full length" Original, I'd drive the game into the ground. The script I'd written was still solid, though, so I was like what the fuck, why did I put a time limit on myself? Add in the fact that Lightning Round videos generally don't cater to re-watching, and a fair amount of subscribers weren't interested in them anyway, and you have the three strikes that took out Lightning Round. Well, "take out" is a bit strong, but I'm not planning on it being a key component to my channel, anymore. If I feel particularly inspired, there's nothing stopping me from making them, but as for now I think I want to try to move beyond it. Initially I was going to re-claim the light blue branding for these shorter videos, but the more I thought about it, the less I liked that idea. Some fans are already dodging the blue labels, and it's represented that format since 2012. Plus, even though they're shorter, these "new format" videos are in the same style as my Originals, so why not label them as such? Currently, that's the plan. No matter if it's 5 minutes or 20 minutes, if it's in my Original style, I'm going to file it under Originals, it just makes sense. As far as Patreon goes, I'm still only going to charge for the full length ones, obviously. SOOOO that's kind of where my mind is right now. The past month or so has been interesting with regards to how I feel about my content and where I want to go from here. I'm used to getting inspiration for individual videos, but recently started getting really inspired with regards to my channel as a whole. That's pretty much the driving force between some of the recent changes you've been seeing/will see... a random gust of inspiration! It's nice to have, for sure, and I'm excited to see where it takes me. Thank you all for continuing to supporting my channel, and I hope you guys like where I'm headed! I've got a lot of fun things planned for this year.

Hmm.. I'm not sure about the expansion of Lightning Round. Or, at least, what it had become. I could totally still make random weird stuff and just file it as a Special/Extra, though. Wouldn't get as many views, but that's okay. I always have the fallback of that green label to basically do anything I want. And trust me, I'll still be making fun of James plenty haha

I have definitely thought about going monthly, and it's probably going to happen. Just makes more sense, and like you said I only really ever charge once a month anyway. Right now though I'm too bogged down to go changing things, but you're definitely not alone in thinking it's the way I should go!

As a habitual rewatcher of yours, I can attest that the only Lighting Rounds I rewatch with any regularity are the goofier ones like Hot Wheels: Crash and Kid Pix Studios. While the other, more informative ones are good, they indeed don't lend themselves well to rewatching. I can agree that this change of formats is a good idea, and I look forward to seeing what you do with it. Having said that, while it might not be my place to say this as a lower-tier backer, depending on your productivity after this change, maybe it might be time to consider switching your Patreon to a monthly thing? Sure, it might put more pressure on you to always put out something every month, but since you've only been charging for originals, it seems like it has been ending up that we get charged once a month with the "per video" format anyway. It could also free you from the pressure of making sure to put out the 10 minute originals so you can get that income from Patreon. Though maybe you don't think or want to think of Patreon in that way. It just feels kinda weird thinking about the possibility of you putting out two 5-minute videos in a month and not getting any Patreon money when those 2 videos likely took more work to make combined than 1 10-minute video. Plus, while I can only speak for myself, I'd like to think most of your Patreon supporters wouldn't be offended if you moved to a monthly donation schedule just because you don't put out as much content per month as Caddicarus or other "per month" Patreon creators, as we're doing this to show our support to you. I'm just making observations as an outsider to this career path, though, so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

It's a good idea. What I would say is that Lightning Round helped concentrate things down when they needed to be, which helped them be creative and focused down on some sort of theme or set of jokes that worked well together. It did get...odd, later on, but I don't know if I'd get rid of it. Adopting a similar style as the original makes me happy, because I do like those better as a whole, but that style is a nice way to break things up. Do you have any plans to take from the style of the Lightning Round and use some of that in something other than the originals? Like, uh, a video of fake comedy Runescape tutorials, or a show where you study modern fashion trends in gaming? Or just ones where you make fun of Caddy. We need more of those.
