His story is *so* interesting - the politics, the science/medicine, and he was relatively progressive for his time. And even a psychology angle there with Arthur and Guiteau. I always think when people start in on the thought experiment of “what would happen if JFK/Lincoln had never been assassinated,” I’m here in my corner wondering about Garfield!

2026-01-10 10:11:27 +0000 UTCOh, I can promise the pope did not give the ok on masturbation. 😅 I’m guessing this was likely some telephone-style interpretation of Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. It’s a series of documents (Encyclicals) that essentially deep dive the Catholic POV on human sexuality, and what the duality of gender tells us about God. (Def no understanding of intersex there, but moving on…) While it does contain some “progressive” ideas for Catholics of the time (if men “O”, so should women), it suggests that orgasm outside of the confines of martial intercourse is a no-no, because essentially, it’s selfish. -Signed, a former theology/apologetics nerd and recent ex-Catholic as of 2020ish.
