New comic: Deprived of Religion

Patrons, thanks for your continued support. I have just released a new 14-page comic:

Deprived of Religion
It is inconceivable that I could ever become religious. Becoming religious would contradict principles that I value more highly.

New comic: Deprived of Religion

This one almost slipped right by me I've been so busy. I have a doctoral degree in Physical Chemistry and I am currently employed as a Research Scientist. Religion is the reason I became a chemist, not because of any particular belief of my own, but simply because I posed a question to my very first chemistry teacher which he could not answer. I also learned about the limits of science at the very same time. Knowing the limits of science, where it begins and ends and to what it is applicable, is perhaps the most vital part of its existence. Many lay people are very confused by science and scientific terms because the limits are not clearly marked and terms are not defined rigorously. I think that the reason you feel/ think the way that you do is simply because no one has bothered to point out to you where exactly science ends and all the things to which it does not apply or are not part of its domain. Let me make a patently non-scientific statement to exemplify this. "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts." The preceding statement is non-scientific because in science and mathematics, the whole is always exactly equal to the sum of its parts. The statement is also true, the qualities of a single water molecule are not in any way shape or form the sum of the qualities of gaseous hydrogen or oxygen, even while their masses are. I am perhaps the strangest proponent of religion you will ever find, but as a working scientist I will be the first to tell you that science alone can only provide an incomplete description of the cosmos. The full description requires that you treat every object as a whole which is greater than the sum of its parts; every particle, atom, molecule, cell, organ, organism, planet, solar system, galaxy, supercluster of galaxies, and the cosmos itself is a singular, indivisible, whole, tangible, discreet, and temporally continuous object or thing. That's not scientific. Furthermore, if the universe contains things which are intangible and empirically unprovable such as Duty, Honor, Hope, Love, Courage, Fear, and God, then be aware that these things are forever outside the domain of science, which is restricted to those things which are empirically provable. Not everything in the universe is empirically provable, the domain of science does not cover the entire universe, and the "scientific method" can easily be applied to non-scientific subjects. Not trying to sway your opinion, trying to point out the things you have not considered and/or are not aware of.

A "deprived of Jordan Peterson" would be great! ;)

Also, as my email newsletter says, I have written two blog posts that explore this religion / scepticism idea from different angles. Here they are: Inconceivable Religion: the making of Deprived of Religion How would I explain my lack of faith to a friend who does believe in God? How would I explain that there is zero chance of me ever changing my mind? In this essay, I reflect on my new comic Deprived of Religion. http://www.stuartmcmillen.com/blog/inconceivable-religion/ Donald Bradman and Jesus Christ What if Don Bradman's cricketing career was documented in the exact same way that Jesus Christ's career is documented? http://www.stuartmcmillen.com/blog/donald-bradman-jesus-christ/
