New Patreon fees
Added 2017-12-09 23:06:24 +0000 UTCHi everyone,
Just a quick note about the revised fees that Patreon is charging. You probably got an email from Patreon about this two days ago. Follow the link to see their new fees, and the reason for the change.
Patreon informed us creators about their plans the day before they publicly announced the news.
It sounds like Patreon has been wrestling with some of the complexities of their business model, which is about facilitating payments from many individual donors, to many individual creators, using many individual transactions that were occurring on many different anniversary dates throughout the month.
It's a complex scenario for them to reckon with, and Patreon chose a 'one size fits all' solution to fix the problem.
In the past two days, there has been a general backlash to this move. The backlash is mostly from those who support a lot of individual creators, with a lot of small payments, especially those donating $1 per month. Cartoonist Jeph Jacques has been covering the issue comprehensively on Twitter, including initiating a phone call with Patreon's CEO earlier today.
I think Patreon was "solving" a problem that not all creators wanted solved. They seem surprised at the negative reaction this is getting.
My hope is that they backtrack somewhat from their original plan, and give creators (or patrons) the ability to choose between different fee options. (My idea: initially charge new patrons a pro-rata payment that will cover them for the rest of the month, and then charge all future payments as bulk payments site-wide on the same monthly anniversary). Edit: actually, this model is a similar, but better option.
The impact on me personally, so far, seems to be losing 4 supporters: dropping from 82 to 78.
What do I think about all of this? Patreon is still by far the most promising method for me to fund my artwork from my readers. It still beats the majority of one-off crowdfunding platforms I have tried, as well as the treadmill of applying for arts grants.
So I will be sticking with Patreon. In fact, I am going to push even harder towards 'more published artwork, more crowdfunding' in 2018.
I think we should make sure we don't lose sight of the forest for the trees, as I think Patreon is a much better option than what existed before. I also think we should give Patreon the opportunity to respond to the backlash.
What do you think about these changes? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Post in the comments below.
As always, thanks for your ongoing support. My $10 per month+ supporters can expect to receive 4 (four!) postcards in the mail between now and New Years. And everyone can expect my new comic Notel to be released in roughly a week's time.

Me too. I'm optimistic that they'll find a better option.

2017-12-10 14:57:45 +0000 UTCLike you, I am both a creator and a patron of others. I also only got the Creator email with the upside of the arrangement, without also getting the Patron email. So I also found it surprising to learn of the blacklash two days later! Patreon seems like they do genuinely care about helping creators, so I hope that they are sifting through the open letters and trying to find a positive way forward.

2017-12-10 06:53:57 +0000 UTCI was a bit surprised by the backlash. Granted, I'm a creator as well as a patron here, and somehow I got the creator email but not the patron email announcement, so I read the "You'll get paid more. Yay!" note quickly and didn't quite process the "processing fee is shifting to patrons" side. I do have to say, that I find the monthly support option to be far superior to the "per item" option. Over a year ago I signed up to support various artists on both systems, and at one point I had a budget cruch where I decided to drop all extra costs. The creators I supported monthly, I was able to go in and just freeze the payments those two months when I was strapped. Then since then, I've been happy to continue supporting them. But the creators where I was supporting them per item created, when I went in to try to freeze my support, there wasn't the option in that model. And, when I dropped my support from them (because I didn't have any other option), it charged me for the five items that had been released that month, which I thought I'd already paid for - so it was like... adding insult to my already injured pocket book. The amount charged wasn't huge but the emotional feel of being hit when I was down was negative enough that since then I haven't signed up to support anyone who releases content via the "payment comes when created art is posted" model. Some of the dialogue around this new fee schedule reminds me of that moment. Anyway, thanks for sharing Alexander K's open letter up above. I just read it and it's excellent. I support his suggestion as well.

2017-12-10 01:15:49 +0000 UTCPS: This person's suggestion for a better payment timeline is simple and elegant, and I totally endorse it: https://kav2k.github.io/patreon_letter/ I am hopeful that Patreon will consider this as a superior option to their current proposal.
