Movie: The Big Sleep

THE BIG SLEEP

I thought the photograph was incriminating evidence for murder. I could look it up, I'm not sure that I should look it up. Mars' casino was crooked. When Marlowe was playing along, making out that he was crooked, he said "If you don't mind I'd like to check out the joint." And Mars said, take that door, you'll see how the operation is run from behind. And Marlowe said no, I'll just go up front where the customers go or something. This is about two sides. Maybe the glamorous side that the customers see but the other side is the crooked and corrupt side. They even proved it by playing one game of roulette that was rigged to win for Mrs Rutledge (Bacall). Mars and Marlowe looked at each other to signify that they both know that spin was rigged. That part we understand but I didn't realize that they also staged that she would be robbed of her winnings. All for show, for the shamus.

"She tried to sit on my lap while I was standing up." I just finished watching. It's super complicated, but the characters are pretty cool and the dialogue and how they interact. I haven't seen it for a long time and I didn't really remember the story. So I could follow along... but I still am not sure about certain details. I could see when they were trying to manipulate Marlowe, like the $500. He knew he was being paid off. He just didn't want to quit. I thought it was because he wasn't done with the General's original request... which actually was pretty vague to begin with. They both knew the debts weren't gambling debts. It was actually blackmail. I think the General (the father of the two girls) just wanted it taken cared of, to make it go away, the scandal and the blackmail. Meanwhile the older daughter assumed the job was to find the Irish guy whom everyone liked. The guy who traded shots with Marlowe back in the day. I didn't actually understand that he was (insert that detail that I didn't know here), all I know was that the General thought of him like a son. This is kind of an odd background that I didn't realize, I'd have to watch it again sometime to see if they mentioned "this detail" that I don't think they did but maybe they did. Anyway this movie is fun for the journey. I'm not sure we need to understand all of the details. It was actually tied up in a nice little package at the end. so I think that's the intent. "What are you a prizefighter?" "No I'm a shamus."

"I was neat, clean, shaved and sober, and I didn’t care who knew it. I was everything the well-dressed private detective ought to be. I was calling on four million dollars."
